Like, imagine if--depending on the weapons damage-- the bullets hitting the infected causes the "stagger" effect as if you were shoving the infected? I even had this main idea:
Pistols and Deagle could cause them to stagger back, but no chance of a knockdown(they don't fall to the ground like the Riot infected sometimes do.
Shotguns could be an 80%-90% knockdown effect(if the shot isn't fatal).
The Sniper Rifles could be 50% for a knockdown(since sniper rifles don't really transfer energy that well).
And the assault rifles could use a 50%-60% chance for a knockdown effect.
In general, hitting the infected with a shot could cause a basic shove animation to play, but the idea is the script controls which type of shove you get. The idea is just to make something that makes it feel like your actually shooting the common infected.
