Clips for Everyone (please read description)

Description
(Please read the description before asking questions)

Ever wanted to (almost) hide the whole map or just wanted to hide grass clipping through a road or wanted to do something else involving terrain-clipping? "Clips for Everyone" are for you. From the smallest possible clipping-network with a width under 1 cell over other smaller networks with widths of 1 cell, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 cells to larger clipping-networks with widths of 256, 512 and 1024 cells. In this clipping-network-set you can find all clipping-networks you may ever need.

Requirements
Find it! 2 (and its dependency Harmony): the only actually required mod. Needed to find the clipping-networks (to find them just search for "CFE").

Recommendations
The following are actually not required but I still highly recommend them to fully use these networks:
  • Fine Road Anarchy: recommended because most usecases for terrain-clipping-networks involve overlapping them with other networks (f.e. if you want to clip two or more neighboring tiles with the methods described in the "How to clip map-tiles or even the whole map"-section of the description or if you f.e. just want to place a smaller clipping-network below a road to hide grass clipping).
  • 81 Tiles and/or Common Ground: unfortunately normally terrain-clipping is only rendered in unlocked tiles meaning even if you f.e. just want to create and/or play a 25-tiles-map with clipped tiles outside the 25-tile-area you still need to unlock all tiles with "81 Tiles" or use "Common Ground" in 81 tiles mode for the clipping to be rendered in all tiles including locked ones.
  • Parallel Road Tool: involved in method 2 in the "How to clip map-tiles or even the whole map"-section of the description.
  • Move it!: involved in methods 1 to 3 of the "How to clip map-tiles or even the whole map"-section.

Known Issues
  • Terrain-clipping is normally only rendered in unlocked tiles but as already described this problem can be fixed with "81 Tiles"- and/or "Common Ground"-mod.
  • The larger networks, especially the ones with a width of 512 and 1024 cells, always snap to the edge of the map and therefore can't be placed normally. To avoid this issue see Methods 2 and 3 of "How to clip map-tiles or even the whole map" (I recommend method 2).
  • If you try to clip edge-tiles at two of the four map-borders there will unfortunately always remain a stretch of unclipped terrain at these two borders but at least the edge-fog hides it pretty well (I think though this issue might hypothetically be fixable if it is somehow possible to extend the 81-Tiles-Mod to f.e. a "121-Tiles-Mod" also including all "tiles" around the edge of the map or atleast past the two affected map-borders. I don't know though how to do that and if it is even possible, so better don't count on it).
  • Terrain-clipping is generally not rendered in the map-editor meaning if you place these networks in map-editor they are invisible. This issue can however also be fixed with the "Common Ground"-mod.
  • After a reload of a savegame you placed larger clipping-networks in exceeding the size of a tile (the networks with a width of 512 and 1024 cells and maybe also the one with a width of 256 cells) only the tile where you placed these networks in will be clipped. If you still want to hide multiple tiles or even the whole map just look under "How to clip map-tiles or even the whole map" in the description.
  • Placing or removing anything in or near clipped areas leads to partially unclipping terrain. This also applies to RICO-buildings placed by the AI. To fix this issue save the game, quit to desktop, restart Cities Skylines and reload the savegame.
  • If you use terrain-deforming natural disasters like meteors, earthquakes or sinkholes these networks will unfortunately be destroyed. This problem unfortunately also applies to the larger networks. So if you are playing with natural disasters then I recommend to only use disasters not deforming the terrain like tornadoes, tsunamis. thunderstorms, etc.

Known Incompatibilities
  • Surface Painter (only networks ≥64 cells): this mod seems to mess with terrain-clipping (potentially because of having its own unfortunately broken terrain-clipping-brush) however it is seemingly possible to avoid issues with this mod by first disabling it then placing down and/or just loading terrain-clipping-networks in the savegame of your choice, saving the game and quitting to desktop and then re-enabling Surface Painter and reloading your savegame.

How to clip map-tiles or even the whole map

Method 1
Required mod: Fine Road Anarchy
  1. Make sure Road-Anarchy is on.
  2. Place down a segment of vanilla trench-ruins at best close to the center of the tile you want to clip.
  3. Select either the clipping-network with a width of 512 cells ("CFE 512 squares") or the one with a width of 1024 cells ("CFE 1024 squares") if you couldn't place the trench-ruins-segment near the center of the tile.
  4. Upgrade the trench-ruins-segment to the selected clipping-network.
  5. Save the game, quit to desktop (not just to the mainmenu), restart Cities Skylines and reload the savegame.

Method 2
Required mods: Fine Road Anarchy, Move It and Parallel Road Tool
  1. Make sure Road-Anarchy is on.
  2. Select trench-ruins and place one segment down.
  3. In Move It check the Picker-option and use the Picker to pick the trench-ruins-segment you just placed (Very important because you won't be able to pick the trench-ruins placed in the following steps).
  4. Open the Parallel Road Tool and add another network.
  5. Change the new network to the "CFE 512 Squares"- or "CFE 1024 Squares"-network and set both, vertical and horizontal distance, to 0.
  6. Place down a segment of the resulting combined network at best near the center of the tile you want to clip.
  7. Use Move It to select all trench-ruins-segments and delete them so that only the clipping-networks remain. To do that first uncheck all other options besides the picker-option.
  8. Save the game, quit to desktop (not just to the mainmenu), restart Cities Skylines and reload the savegame.

Method 3
Required mods: Fine Road Anarchy and Move It
  1. Make sure Road-Anarchy is on (although in this case it might also work with anarchy turned off if there is no other large clipping-network near the location you will place the following clipping-network).
  2. Place down a segment of the "CFE 512 Squares"-network where you can place it (the "CFE 1024 Squares"-network unfortunately doesn't work because it always snaps to the edge of the map).
  3. Select the network with Move It and move it to the tile you want to clip.
  4. Save the game, quit to desktop (not just to the mainmenu), restart Cities Skylines and reload the savegame.

How to clip the whole map:
To (almost) clip the whole map you just need to either repeat method 2 or method 3 with all 81 map-tiles. I recommend you to use method 2 though if you want to do that because in this case this method is the fastest.

Thank you for reading the whole description and I wish you a lot of fun with Clips for Everyone.

Sorry for temporarily switching Clips for Everyone to hidden but I updated the description. Now it should be visible again.

@Köttur.CS-Builder thank you for the comment. I will probably add more descriptive images/examples some time in the future after "discovering" more use-cases for this set.

@nilepereiraa I've now added an image demonstrating the issue with Surface Painter.

Hello, thanks a lot for this. I would like to suggest you, if possible, to add more descriptive images/examples.

@nilepereiraa Thank you for the comment. Ok, I tested it again. The issue actually only affects all networks with a width of 64 cells and more. I will add screenshots illustrating the issue soon.

Hello. I want to know if these networks work the same way as the clipping networks found in this pack ? If so, there should not be any incompatibilities with Surface Painter as I've extensively used both. Adding screenshots above would also be helpful in illustrating to others how the supposed incompatibility looks like
