Description
DX 5385 was originally numbered as DX 2625, and is the next member of the class after 5379. She was built by General Electric in 1976, entering service in April of that year. As with all other DX's, 2635 was first painted in the Clockwork Orange livery. The engine was renumbered as DX 5385 in 1978, as part of the new Traffic Monitoring System.

She kept running in Clockwork Orange for another 6 years, and was repainted to International Orange in late 1984. 10 years later, she was modified further. This time she was repainted in New Zealand Rail blue and fitted with the distinctive air intakes (or air chute ducts) for use in the Otira Tunnel. Today it's only the DXC subclass that carries these chutes, and they can only be found in the South Island.

Sometime in the late 1990s, DX 5385 was repainted into Tranz Rail blue. Basically this was just NZ Rail blue but with a change of logo. The engine was unlucky enough to receive the Toll Rail livery in August 2008, and was reclassified as a DXB at the same time. She was also fitted with heavy-duty drawgear (couplings) and an upgraded cab.

It wasn't until 2008 when the engine was reclassified as DXC 5385. After KiwiRail was launched in July 2008, the engine continued to run in the Toll Rail livery, but with the logo replaced by KiwiRail stickers.

DXC 5385 was repainted into the KiwiRail livery in August 2011, and remains in this livery today. She is still going strong in the South Island, and is now 44 years old.
