The DarthTech Aerospace Outland Ranger is the first ship of the Outland series, and was initially designed to serve a dedicated fighter/patrol role for fleets operating on the fringes of explored space. Its rugged spaceframe, ease of repair, on-board warp core, and notable firepower allow the Ranger to patrol large sectors of space with little support. This made the Ranger an attractive option for anti-piracy and anti-smuggling applications in addition to convoy escort and carrier strike operations.

Though initially designed for military use, the popularity of the Ranger's design attracted attention from other groups. The Ranger's impressive speed and firepower led it to become, somewhat ironically, a popular choice for piracy. Though the Ranger is unable to haul cargo, more established pirate groups found great success in using the spacecraft to hunt down and disable targets ahead of the larger freighters which would ultimately secure the cargo.

The Ranger's tough shielding and ease of repair made the ship a favorite among many civilians as well. The craft's survivability protected pilots when rescue could be days or weeks away, while its simple design allowed for easy modification by even novice shipwrights. For these reasons, the Outland Ranger grew in popularity, especially in the remote frontiers of human space. The role the Ranger has played in life on the edge of the galaxy has led some to remark "as the Henry Repeating Rifle was the gun that won the West, DarthTech's Outland Ranger is the fighter that won the Rim."
