The Oregon Pacific Railroad is a short-line operating two physically separate routes in the state of Oregon. One of them runs in Southeast Portland - named the East Portland Division - while the other uses part of the former Southern Pacific ‘Molalla Branch’ between Canby and Liberal.

First starting in 1991, the railroad now operates a small collection of old second-hand switcher locomotives, and one of them is a GMD-1.

GMD-1 No. 1413 was built in 1959, originally as Canadian National No. 1045. Like most of her classmates, this engine was built with an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement. She was rebuilt in 1989, which included renumbering to 1413 and conversion to a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement.

The engine left her native Canada in 2009, when she was sold to the Oregon Pacific Railroad, becoming the youngest engine in their fleet. Today she is assigned to the East Portland Division, and spends her time either hauling freight or - get this - a public excursion train on Saturdays. Thankfully GMD-1 No. 1413 is still in service today.

The Oregon Pacific have a flyer that gives a summary of 1413’s history, which reads as follows:

This locomotive is a rare and unique GMD-1 originally built in 1959 for the Canadian National Railway. It was heavily rebuilt and upgraded in 1989 to include a larger engine, fuel tanks, upgraded bogies and modern electronics.

It’s a ‘road switcher’ locomotive capable of 65mph and features a V-12 diesel engine that makes 1,275 horsepower. Each of the 12 cylinders is 645 cubic inches in size. The engine idles at 275rpm with a maximum of 800rpm. The fuel tank holds 2,000 gallons and this locomotive weighs 245,000lbs.

This locomotive was purchased by the Oregon Pacific Railroad in 2009 and is our largest and most powerful locomotive. It currently serves on our East Portland division as our primary freight locomotive and weekend excursion locomotive.
