Description
Completely overhauled version of my first ever map. With a year of "stuck at home" map making, I have had plenty of time to hone this craft, and I figured that this map deserved the justice of a redo.

From the London centred, populous south, to the industrial North, through lands of rich soil, to lands of rich stone. This map covers the East Coast & West Coast Main Lines from the South Coast to the Lowlands. There are opportunities everywhere, but not every route will be wise in 1850.

The "Race to the North" was the name given by the press to occasions in two summers of the late 19th century when British passenger trains belonging to different companies would literally race each other from London to Scotland over the two principal rail trunk routes connecting the English capital city to Scotland – the West Coast Main Line which runs from London Euston via Crewe and Carlisle and the East Coast Main Line route from London King's Cross via York and Newcastle. The "races" were never official and publicly the companies denied that what happened was racing at all. Results were not announced officially and the outcomes have since been hotly debated. In the 20th century there were also occasions of competition for speed on the two routes. - *https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_to_the_North*

Gitbiz's Race to the North Map with Industry, painted, with improved waterways, with their grateful permission.

Map created with base game assets only.

Very Large 1:4
Created with intel i7, Nvidia RTX 2080, 32gb ram.
Looks fantastic with "Morning Light" mod & expanded render distance. If your machine can handle it. I tried to keep the trees thick enough to be convincing while not blowing up your GPU.

@[EU] Mr.Hooper this map was made with base game assets only. I've messed about with lefthand drive mods before, but as compatibility is mixed with mods (better these days though) I usually just run trains left handed and ignore it with the cars. It's been a while though, so perhaps I'll give it another go; or give directions here to do so if successful as I find maps with mod dependencies are usually much less successful than ones without.

Any chance we can get left hand drive to work with this map? to make it more realistic

@malcolm.crabbe no mods were used to make this map, some of the roads in the playthrough you are referencing appear to have been mods. I had to balance towns, with maximum starting roads, and other limits.

This looks to be a fantastic map, having watched Joe Dobson's youtube videos. However, having downloaded it I found a lot of the default roads etc are missing, name;y roundabouts. Now as there doesn't appear to be a way of changing the start year I have no idea if this is a bug or simply down to a "release" date roundabouts become available? - could someone enlighten me please, or advise if the start date can be changed

This map looks great! I did notice that it has a significant undersupply of Planks and Steel, though. Both resources have a total of 800 production and 3200 consumption on the map. Was this intentional?

Didn't think there would be a reply that fast. But yeah that's understandable, would much rather you keep the game fun for yourself and keep enjoying what you're doing creating great maps! Keep up the good work mate!

@Pulse Survive thanks for the compliment! This is a repaint of Gitbiz's original map (and the map where I learned to create maps). Not to say that I will never do another Great Britain or Megalomaniac sized map, however I need to keep it fun for myself :) My last map took me 5 months to complete.

I have 2 other larger scale UK maps, "London and Paris" of the English Channel and "Greater London" with 2 versions, with & without mods. Both of those are my own creations from the ground up.

This is my favourite map to play! Is there any chance of making it meglomaniac?
