G39 Iron Ore Jenny

Description
In the 1960s the PRR invested in a new pier for the importation of iron ore in south Philadelphia, and with it, a brand-new purpose-built class of gondola or "ore jenney" - the G39
Designed to take 70 tons of iron ore in a much smaller form factor than previous multipurpose hopper cars, the G39 proved easily capable of shuttling massive quantities of ore from the ports in the east to steel mills in the Midwest. Major iron ore users installed rotary dumpers for the rapid unloading of ore. These cars were among the last purpose-built iron ore jenneys ever constructed, and were some of the newest cars on the railroad when the Penn Central merger occurred.

Unfortunately the G39's reign came to an early end with the creation of Conrail. The efficiencies allowed by using conventional hopper cars for iron ore with coal on the backhaul dwarfed the problems caused by having a specialized class of car for just one class of cargo. Conrail switched back to the earlier method of partially loading regular hoppers before exiting the iron ore transportation business entirely sometime in the 80s.

why is the capacity so low??? i want my money back!

TPF2 measures cargo capacity in arbitrary units - but we now have a guideline that one "unit" of iron ore is equal to one cubic meter. Therefore the capacity of this car reflects the load in cubic meters and is thus very low. In an ideal world, this ore would be very heavy and thus the low capacity would be justified but cargo in TPF2 is almost entirely identical - the difference between "coal" and "iron ore" and "stone" (and even discrete cargo like machines and goods!) is just a texture. This can be partially remedied by way of PMV's Heavy Cargo Challenge though I haven't tested these cars with that mod yet.

Stats for nerds:

Introduced: 1961, 1968, 1976 (PRR, Penn Central, and Conrail, respectively)
Capacity: 24/4 = 6(ish)
Max. Speed: 45 MPH
Weight: 22 tons

Nice mod, I have changed it a little bit to carry sand instead of iron ore.

Beautiful model, but in terms of capacity and playability, they are far worse than even the second era aggregate wagons.

LOL! Nice one Superjesse64! I'm really loving these new rail cars. We defiantly need more locos and rolling stock for the US.
