History:
The oasis of Khotan is located on an important and oldest branch of the Silk Road. It was then an important route between India and Tibet in the South East and Central Asia in the North West. Around year zero, it was inhabited by the Tokharians, an Indo-European people. It is the capital of the ancient kingdom of Khotan (56 to 1000), one of the oldest Buddhist countries. During the latter part of the tenth century, the kingdom of Khotan engaged in a struggle against the Turks Karakhanides (840 - 1212) from the North-East, whose state religion was Islam. They briefly kidnapped Kashgar from the Karakhanids in 970 and, according to the Chinese account, the king of Khotan offered to send an elephant, as a tribute, to the court of China. But, in 1006, the Karakhanid Yusuf Ier Qadir Khan (1026-1032) of Kashgar conquered Khotan, ending the existence of the independent state of Khotan.
