RMS Tourmaline (Revised)

The Tourmaline Class was the second class of ships built by the Gem Line and were the first ships to gain the title of Royal Mail Ship. They were also auxiliary powered, with steam and sails. There were only 2 ships in this class, RMS Tourmaline and RMS Zircon.
Tourmaline was the first Gem Liner to have the RMS prefix and was very successful; a sister was ordered after the maiden voyage. In 1871, she was sold to Daniels Line and renamed "Jackal". [PD] In 1885, she collided with a schooner but was repaired, with 1 fatality on the ship. In 1890, she was laid up until 1896, when the vessel was purchased for an experiment, and was heavily refitted. The experiment went well, and the ship continued rotting in the Mersey River, until in 1898, when a horrible storm hit Liverpool. The vessel’s mooring lines snapped, and the ship drifted onto a sandbar. By the time the storm had passed, the vessel’s frame was twisted, and her wreck was scrapped on the spot. Parts of her keel still exist to this day.
