BMS Classic - Chapter Collection: <to be added>

What is BMS Classic?

BMS Classic started out as a simple mod aiming to undo some of the changes brought to Black Mesa in 1.0 and 1.5, such as unnecessary railroading, insultingly excessive handholding, questionable balance decisions, and watered-down combat. Since then, it's evolved into an attempt to bring together the best parts of Black Mesa and Half-Life and expand upon them.

Bringing back HL1 setpieces that didn't make the cut for one reason or another, adding incentive for the player to explore and investigate off the beaten trail, trusting players to be able to think and reason their way through puzzles without force-feeding them the answer, expanding upon areas of the facility to make it feel more alive, and making the player have to think about how they fight to survive - that's what BMS Classic aims to do.

Many maps have also received an additional detail pass, making them more atmospheric and immersive by way of enhanced/reworked lighting and improved water visuals. Attempts have also been made to improve performance on some particularly troublesome maps, but given Source's limitations, there's only so much that can be done.

Is BMSC compatible with [insert mod here]?

It depends. Other chapter mods, such as the Chapter Overhaul mods or VOX Restoration mods, aren't compatible. BMSC extensively edits many of the game's maps, so any other mods that edit maps are going to run into conflicts. Compatibility with some of these mods (namely the VOX Restoration mods and Black Mesa Character Expansion) is something I'd like to investigate further down the line.

Who's behind BMSC?

BMSC is primarily a joint effort, between Vassago Rain and myself. Some chapters also have additional support or resources from other modders, as listed in the Contributors section.

It's important to note that BMSC is fundamentally a two-man effort. There's only so much we have the time, resources, and ability to do. As such, we've had to make decisions about what does or doesn't get added/changed. We're just two people with a love for Half-Life doing what we can here, to try and realize Black Mesa's full potential. If you have specific questions about why certain changes were made, or why things were added/removed/etc., feel free to ask.

What's in this download?

This download is the BMSC edition of Office Complex. The primary change BMSC brings to the table is banishing the shotgun and putting the revolver back in its rightful place - Black Mesa's shotgun is simply too much of a powerhouse to work with the early game's survival horror atmosphere.
On top of that, ammo and enemy placement has been reworked - you'll want to be a bit more careful about managing your resources, as well as watching your back. The freezer on map C's also been opened up once again, allowing the player to navigate it at their own pace and find their own route - much more in-line with the spirit of the original Half-Life.

A more detailed changelog can be found in the Workshop download folder - for this addon, that'll be somewhere like Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362980/2399348044. The contents of the changelog can also be found in the pinned discussions.

For 8 years, the revolver was in BM's Office Complex - and since BM has different balancing to Half-Life, this worked really well. It supports the "survival horror" atmosphere of the chapter, particularly with its lower ammo cap, and it gives the player a long-range option in WGH and BP that's very useful with BM's larger maps.

Black Mesa 1.0 put the shotgun back in Office Complex - which is fine and more faithful to Half-Life on paper, but in practice, it severely undermines the atmosphere that the chapter is meant to invoke. BM's shotgun is not the close-range, limited powerhouse that HL1's shotgun was - its range, accuracy, and damage rival (if not outperforms) that of HL2's shotgun. It makes the chapter as a whole feel quite different, and not in a good way. The justification for putting the shotgun back, of being more faithful to HL, also doesn't hold up, given all of 1.0's other changes that deviate from the original game far more significantly than a simple weapon swap.

Hold the phone, "putting the revolver back in it's rightful place"?

What the fuck do you mean? The revolver doesn't appear in Half-Life 1 until BLAST PIT.

The Black Mesa devs placed the Shotgun exactly where it has been for the past 25 years. Don't blame the BM devs for placing it there, blame Valve!

2.0 has more interactivity, changes out textures and office designs to look more like a 90s office and HL1, much better balance, much better use of lighting and shadows, brings back various HL1 things, more NPCs you can rescue, more secrets, and is overall a little more challenging.

Playing 1.x and 2.0 back to back is a good way to show how far the project's come.

@jakestritty I just checked and the Office Complex Classic Textures are already seem completely compatible with this mod, as far as I can tell.

We might do that when we get to OC, among a slew of other improvements, both big and small. The earlier chapters got the least amount of love, and serious changes didn't start happening until WGH.
