History:
The Gonur-depe site, located in Turkmenistan, buried under the sand of the Karakum desert, was discovered by Soviet archaeologists in the 1950s. It is the main site of the Oxus culture. It is an archaeological culture from the ancient Bronze Age which developed in Bactria and Margiana from the end of the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. AD (2300 to 1700 BC). Gonur-depe seems to have been at that time the capital of the kingdom of Margiane. Traces of ancient agriculture, dating from the 7th millennium BC. Around the site, archaeologists have discovered the ruins of monumental fortresses and temples comparable to constructions in Assyria and Babylon.
