Ophir

City-State Trait: +2 Faith to Mine improvements built over strategic resources.

City-State Type: Industrial

History:
Ophir is a port or region mentioned in the Bible which was known for its wealth, especially gold. King Solomon is believed to have received a shipment of gold, silver, wood (probably sandalwood), gems, ivory, monkeys and peacocks from Ophir every three years. Biblical disciples, archaeologists, and various other people tried to determine the exact location of Ophir. It appears that the ships returning from Ophir were unloading their cargo at a port in southern Sinai from the Red Sea. The port in question would be Ezion-Geber, which is located near Eilat on the edge of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom. For some, Ophir was located somewhere in southwestern Arabia, in the region of modern Yemen. Others locate it in India. Another possibility would be the African shore of the Red Sea, present-day Somalia, whose name and where The Periplus of the Eritrean Sea, written in the 1st century, locates the port of Adulis. This region also has a long tradition of mining, artisanal and community extraction. One thing seems to be certain, is that this region is supposedly close to the kingdom of the Queen of Sheba, the sponsor of the shipments of goods. According to legend, his son Menelik I was King of Ethiopia, which would seem to support this last thesis. In the 19th century, a German explorer named Karl Mauch believed he had found Ophir in present-day Zimbabwe, where a lost city is believed to be the largest stone building in the pre-colonial sub-Saharan zone. Great Zimbabwe has indeed been a center of gold production and a place of trade for part of southern Africa. These interpretations are not unrelated to the influx of white settlers in South Africa, dreaming of finding the mythical city of Gold "Ophir" or "Zand", just as the first settlers in South America sought El Dorado.

Compatible with Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, NewFrontier.
