It is a special specification vehicle for the Kanmon tunnel, and four cars (EF81 301-304) were newly manufactured from 1973 to 1974.
Due to its unique appearance covered with an unpainted stainless steel plate, it is known by enthusiasts as a 'GINGAMA'.
