For years now the legend of the Kathar rift has been growing among the crews of bulk haulers and naval vessels alike. It is said that ghost ships crewed by the damned trawl the void, ripping the souls from anyone unfortunate to cross their path and using them to fuel the hellfire of their reactors. Fear of the region has recently reached fever pitch as nearly 1 in 3 ships to enter the rift never emerges again. It is common for captains to resign their positions upon being ordered into the region, preferring instead to eke out a safer living in the outer colonies. Unknown to all is that these disappearances can be attributed to one class of ship. The Umbra class stealth frigate. These ships boast such superlative stealth technology that the only way to detect one would be to crash into it. To what faction these ships belong and to what ends they are operating in the rift are both unknown but they have managed to cripple inter system shipping to to point of causing planet wide famines on a number of metro-worlds that can no longer support food production, drastically shifting the scales in the current conflict.
