Class description
Frigates (FF) are a class of smaller to midsize warships, capable of independent operations but best supported with corvettes and destroyers or part of a larger formation. These warships have a conventional gun based design philosophy and carry little missile armament, and generally no torpedo armament. They specialize in anti-naval and anti-airship operations. This prioritization means AA capabilities are suboptimal compared to destroyers. Anti-sub weapons are usually not present. Carrying a comparably small powerplant, they have fewer defensive measures compared to the average destroyer. This class evolves via the light cruisers into the Dreadnought class of (pocket) battleships.

The ship
The Valkyrie class heavy frigate is a heavy gun platform, based on the Thunderer class heavy frigate. The Valkyrie specializes in anti-naval and anti-airship operations, by using 300mm rail assisted guns. With higher peak firepower 190 versus 170) than the Thunderer, for a lower price (320 versus 350), she may seem as a more attractive ship. Indeed, the guns are powerful in an otherwise formidable hull with excellent survivability for a frigate. As you can expect from Eagle Industries, the guns on this ship are configurable, allowing you to opt for either AP (good against armour thicker than 3m) and APHE. The APHE variant officially has 130 firepower, but don't be fooled, the destructive potential is much higher. Finally, 300mm HESH shells are automatically selected when the ships' engines are damaged, so as to maintain as much firepower as possible. You may manually clear the shells to immediately switch shells.

Performance wise, she is a bit more finicky than Thunderer. She'll perform much better against regular, broadsiding ships and airships, and usually worse against frontsiders and thickly armoured ships. Thunderer pummels an enemy ships exterior, while Valkyrie has to make use of penning power to reap havoc. Thunderer also has superior performance against light aircraft.

All in all, expect a good anti-ship platform, capable of killing most enemies up to twice her cost, of 1,5 times the cost if they're godlies.

The Valkyrie is also the start of the heavy gun line of ships, with the Vanguard being the direct successor, with the dreadnoughts Jupiter and Orion closing the line.

v62. Partially rebuilt the Valkyrie, it is now 8m longer. The added space is used to add a whopping 4 missiles. More importantly however, the amount of engines has doubled from 2 to 4. While they individually have less power than the two original engines, the overall output has increased with almost 5k HP and is now more resilient to damage.

Furthermore, some design features have been updated, the ammo selection switch now works as intended and a switch board for engine and AI control has been placed.

The Orion will be available in due time :D She's currently being reworked/improved, as it used to be able to retire a Meg with relative ease. Atm, she can't... So she needs some love. :)
