Description

Introduction

This is a pack of 22 unique assets including several live and several dead trees. These are effectively meant to replace my original Western Redcedar pack. I was happy with those when I released them, but I changed my modeling technique drastically when I did the Douglas Firs and I've been wanting to bring these up to that standard ever since. I designed these new ones using more accurate real-world dimensions, and they're much more detailed as well.

The originals - which are admittedly quite a bit lower tri - are still available on their own if you prefer them.

The Tree

The Western Redcedar is a large coniferous tree native to the Pacific Northwest. It grows in wet temperate forests near the coast, and is easily identified by its fuzzy red bark and scaly needles. The Redcedar doesn't grow as tall as its cousin the Sequoia, but it does grow much taller than the garden variety arborvitae, with which it's also closely related.

Most oldgrowth redcedars have been logged to take advantage of their rot-resistant wood. However, younger cedars continue to grow alongside Douglas Firs, Western Hemlocks, and other thirsty trees in coastal regions.

Placement

These trees like sheltered areas with lots of fresh water. They work particularly well in mountainous river valleys.

I recommend using Forest Brush Mod to get a nice distribution. Place the taller trees with high canopies in the heart of the forest, with the thicker trees that get more sunlight around the edges and clearings.

Use the dead trees sparingly. I recommend hand-placing these or brushing them in small clusters.

Technical

- All 22 assets in the pack share a single 4096 x 1024 texture set. The Loading Screen Mod should eliminate the vast majority of functional RAM requirement for this pack.

- Tri counts are all over the place. They bottom out at 28 for the smallest stump but go up to 8446 (yes, really really). Keep in mind that the higher tri trees are also much bigger, so you won't need as many of them. They should perform similar to my other conifers if you don't do something ridiculous with them. If you're really worried, you can use the old ones instead.

- I did NOT alter tree sway on these assets. I recommend using the Tree Movement Control mod to reduce sway, which can eliminate sway on LODs as well, and doubles for random tree rotation.

- Tree LOD Fix is critical as always, and the larger trees may warrant Ultimate Level of Detail and/or Adaptive Prop Visibility Distance.

I really appreciate all the details you provide about where the trees grow and how to place them, very cool!

These are amazing, they fit in perfectly with almost any landscape and look photorealistic, the damaged trunks and trees really add to the astetic as well.

amazing work again. I swear you make me play this game more just to make maps with forests and rocks and forget to build cities

@GregThunder - These are safe to subscribe or unsubscribe to at any point. They don't replace anything, they'll just become available in your tree menu.

should I only subscribe to this one for future savegames

Thanks guys :)

@Vilamno - probably not for these ones, not anytime soon anyway, It's possible I'll release an expansion pack with some lower poly trees included, but I'd have to build a new texture and stuff to make a significant impact, and these are a difficult tree to do well that way.

Will you make low poly version?
