History:
Nimroud is an archaeological site taking its name from the biblical character Nimrod, on which are the ruins of the Assyrian city called Kalkhu. This tell is located east of the Tigris, 35 km from Nineveh (a suburb of the current Iraqi city of Mosul). It is one of the largest metropolises of ancient Mesopotamia, stretching over around 360 hectares at its peak, when it was the capital of Assyria from the reign of Ashurnasirpal II (883-859 BC). . AD). The latter has indeed undertaken to rebuild it completely and expand it so that it reflects the power of his kingdom. It had the rank of capital until the end of the 8th century BC.
