BMS Classic - Chapter Collection: <to be added>

What is BMS Classic?

BMS Classic started out as a simple mod aiming to undo some of the changes brought to Black Mesa in 1.0 and 1.5, such as unnecessary railroading, insultingly excessive handholding, questionable balance decisions, and watered-down combat. Since then, it's evolved into an attempt to bring together the best parts of Black Mesa and Half-Life and expand upon them.

Bringing back HL1 setpieces that didn't make the cut for one reason or another, adding incentive for the player to explore and investigate off the beaten trail, trusting players to be able to think and reason their way through puzzles without force-feeding them the answer, expanding upon areas of the facility to make it feel more alive, and making the player have to think about how they fight to survive - that's what BMS Classic aims to do.

Many maps have also received an additional detail pass, making them more atmospheric and immersive by way of enhanced/reworked lighting and improved water visuals. Attempts have also been made to improve performance on some particularly troublesome maps, but given Source's limitations, there's only so much that can be done.

Is BMSC compatible with [insert mod here]?

It depends. Other chapter mods, such as the Chapter Overhaul mods or VOX Restoration mods, aren't compatible. BMSC extensively edits many of the game's maps, so any other mods that edit maps are going to run into conflicts. Compatibility with some of these mods (namely the VOX Restoration mods and Black Mesa Character Expansion) is something I'd like to investigate further down the line.

Who's behind BMSC?

BMSC is primarily a joint effort, between Vassago Rain and myself. Some chapters also have additional support or resources from other modders, as listed in the Contributors section.

It's important to note that BMSC is fundamentally a two-man effort. There's only so much we have the time, resources, and ability to do. As such, we've had to make decisions about what does or doesn't get added/changed. We're just two people with a love for Half-Life doing what we can here, to try and realize Black Mesa's full potential. If you have specific questions about why certain changes were made, or why things were added/removed/etc., feel free to ask.

What's in this download?

This download is the BMSC edition of Apprehension. The barrel puzzle at the beginning has been overhauled to make it a bit more logical (as well as mirror HL1 a bit better), some of the flooded areas have received some detailing and goodies to encourage exploring, and the assassin fight on C has been reworked to add more verticality to the engagement. Additionally, a lot of work was done to enhance the chapter's art, emphasizing the environment's hostile, unwelcoming atmosphere. Be careful when swimming in the murky depths!

A more detailed changelog can be found in the Workshop download folder - for this addon, that'll be somewhere like Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362980/2454761092. The contents of the changelog can also be found in the pinned discussions.

If you're looking for a version of Apprehension that's compatible with the Definitive On A Rail mods, you can find it HERE

the first ichthy should have more health, that would make the fight more intense.

Most of the changes here are subtle, but improve the overall experience. Better lighting and atmospherics, rewards for exploration, etc. The addition of melee bullsquids is always welcome. The biggest highlight is the remix of the assassin fight at the end, which makes better use of the space and includes interesting details here and there.

A wonderful re-do of the chapter. Bit of a shame that the barrel puzzle at the start wasn't retooled to use proper physics like it did in HL2, though beggars can't be choosers, I guess.

Regarding the rerouted entrance to the Icky chamber, it'd probably be worth making it so that the scripted sequence (where the scientist gets eaten by the Icky) only triggers when the player drops down from the observation room, so that the sequence doesn't play out while the player is exploring the new area.

The amount of secrets crammed away into these maps is astounding, its always nice to come across these neatly-hidden and almost-invisible caches with extra goodies to snag.

For the final arena with the Black-Ops Assassins, one recommendation I'd make would be to scatter some HECU corpses around the place, as a sort of call-back to the Assassin's antagonistic stance against the HECU.

The nerf to the total number of enemies, not their stats.

@Vassago Rain Honest question, what enemy nerfs do you mean? I don't recall any enemies being changed in 1.0/1.5. In fact, the HECU had their AI updated and all damage values have increased in 1.0/1.5 compared to old 0.9 numbers. For example, on Easy 0.9 houndeyes do 8 dmg (100 hp/0 armor -> 92 hp/ 0 armor) compared to 1.5 where they do 10 dmg (100 hp/0 armor -> 90 hp/0 armor). In conclusion, enemies have gotten more dangerous in 1.5 in my opinion.

One nonsense encounter that shouldn't even be considered an encounter was removed, and one new encounter was added. Everything else is either the way it was before the 1.0/1.5 enemy nerfs, or was changed to pose an actual threat.

Were any of the enemy spawns moved or eliminated, or did you just add more on top of what’s there?
Vassago Rain  [author] 13 Apr, 2021 @ 12:29am
Ammo, enemy numbers, and some enemy placements were all adjusted so you won't be fighting one fish, 2 zombies, 3 HECU, and 8 vorts total throughout the chapter while swimming in bullets.

You also won't find 120+ bolts, with or without the plugin.
White and Birdy™  [author] 12 Apr, 2021 @ 10:20pm
Ammo pickups were adjusted in general. Even if you're playing this without the ammo pickup fix plugin, ammo supply has been rebalanced (e.g. less crossbow ammo and less MP5 grenades than before).

When you say ammo amounts were adjusted, is that in relation to pickup values or removal of ammo pickups here & there?
