Metra F40PH-3 No. 175

Metra 175 was the first F40PH to be rebuilt and repainted in the so-called ‘Lightning Bolt’ livery, with the work being finished in 2016. This livery is also carried by Metra’s three F59PHs and is actually an amended version of the livery carried by their MP36PH-3S locomotives.

More recently the railroad’s F40PHM-2 engines have also been rebuilt, repainted in Lightning Bolt colours and redesignated as F40PHM-3.

175 was built by Electro-Motive Division in 1989, as one of the last engines in an order of 35 F40PH-2s for Metra. The engine first received the classic Metra blue and - as far as I know - never carried the old RTA livery.

In 2016, the engine was sent to Progress Rail’s workshops in Patterson, Georgia and rebuilt as an F40PH-3. The rebuild included the installation of Positive Train Control, rebuilt bogies, upgraded prime mover (to comply with the EPA’s Tier 0+ emission standards) and - of course - a repaint in Metra’s new livery. The work was finished in September 2016.

Following her return to service, 175 has settled down to a fairly run-of-the-mill life hauling commuter trains around Chicago. Throughout 2019 the locomotive was decked-out with an advertisement for Northwestern Medicine. Metra 175 is still in service today, and is now 32 years old.
