High Resolution Cubemaps & Shadows

This is a map from Half-Life 2's campaign. I strongly recommend having played the original game first before experiencing this.

Another map where I showcase the maximum extent of the Source Engine's static lighting system using GMod's 64bit compile tools. Features 256x256 resolution cubemaps and the highest resolution shadows possible without the compile tools throwing errors due to to many vertices or faces being to complex for lightmaps. This was supposed to come out immediately after the release of Prospekt Defense, but due to some issues during visibility calculations, it was postponed.

Compiled for LDR & HDR and retains full functionality as long as you have Half-Life 2 purchased & installed on Steam, and mounted in Garry's Mod.

Map name is d2_coast_12_hrcs, and can be found in the "Half-Life 2" map section.

Progressing backwards upon spawning in will take you to map d2_coast_11_hrcs if you are subscribed to it. Completing the level as you would in Half-Life 2 will take you to map d2_prision_01_hrcs if you are subscribed to it.

Special note: This map has a ludicrous size and exceptionally abhorrent performance issues. This is your warning, I usually don't feel the need to do this since it usually I am not affected/don't care, but this map for some reason is pushing the Source Engine hard.

Misc info/trivia:
  • Features a bit of geometry hidden by the original Valve mappers ( specifically the extra power cables and the water in the end sewer pipe), and changes made for the Xbox 360 version of HL2 (the big ladder ladder most notably is a prop, instead of a brush)
  • This map is not from a decompile.

If you don't have Half-Life 2 mounted, it's possible that scripted sequences will not play. (There may not be any on this map)

The increased far clipping plane is one big reason why it runs so bad. When I set r_farz to 8192 my FPS goes from 60 to 200, however it's still not as high as most other maps (a minimum of 400-1000 fps depending on the map, even some of the HRCS maps run this good) and it gives a visible seam which is why you increased it in the first place. Maybe you could add some fake fog in the skybox like what HL2 Update did if you don't mind putting some custom textures in the addon or even just change the fog color to match the bottom half of the skybox.
