Concept

The Death of Alexander (DoA) scenario is based on a “shattered world” type map in which Alexander the Great has died and his successors struggle to impose their rule on the subjects of his empire and prevent them from winning their freedom. At the same time, in India, Chandragupta Maurya has just begun his war to overthrow the delegitimised Nanda dynasty, represented by de facto autonomous rajas. Unlike the standard starting map, this scenario reduces the major powers to their heartlands, though they have larger treasuries and armies and better-quality troops than their neighbours. Many new nations have been created by the breakaway provinces and many previously subject nations are in a position to prosper.

Though the major powers had full control over their heartlands, we can imagine that their authority may still have been somewhat tenuous at the periphery given the insecurity during the period. The vanilla version of Imperator begins in 303 BC with a potential war between the new Mauryan and Seleukid Empires for control over their borderlands. Historically, after the Battle of Ipsus two years later, Antigonus' kingdom was partitioned, so its enormous and enduring presence is anachronistic as the game goes on. Carthage can easily control the tribes of Numidia in vanilla, some of which fought as Roman allies under Massinissa. And so on. The Death of Alexander represents the fragile authority and volatility in peripheral areas after the death of Alexander by allowing local rulers to establish themselves independently or face (re)absorption by Alexander's successors.

The proper historical context for this scenario would be 20 years before the vanilla start date, in 323 BC, when news of Alexander's death shocked the world. This date also confines Maurya to its initial starting point before overthrowing the unpopular Nanda dynasty in 322 BC, so the Maurya player is in effect trying to establish the Mauryan Empire by attempting to subjugate the virtually autonomous rajas of a Nanda state that has lost all legitimacy.

The ages of key characters are unfortunately still anachronistic, as Pyrrhus of Epirus was not born until 318 BC, though under this model Epirus and other smaller states have a better chance to make their mark.

The republics in northern India represent government traditions in the region before and after the Maurya period that would be extinguished in the later Gupta period.

Acknowledgments

This mod would not have been possible without the major contributions of Master of Experts and Shinymewtwo99

Most flags for the formables were taken from the Total War Flags mod, by Dr. Njitram. However, the flags are currently discoloured due to an unresolved bug in Imperator 2.0 that can be seen in the mercenary flag in the vanilla version.
