Giant Swing (เสาชิงช้า)

It's located in old town of Bangkok, the Giant Swing was built in 1784 by King Rama I during the early establishment of Bangkok. The ceremony was held by putting a Hindu priest on the swing to welcome Isara down to Earth. The swing ceremony was discontinued following the reign of Rama II, as it was perceived as inoperable due to damages caused by the lightning. Later on in 1920, the swing was renovated and moved to its current location and the ceremony was revived for another 15 years before it was indefinitely discontinued after several fatal accidents.

The swing was renovated in 1959 until the wooden pillars were showing some of the serious damages after 45 years of use. In 2005, the government initiated the renovation of the swing for the Royal Ceremony which was to occur in 2007, using 35-meter tall teak tree trunks to maintain the structure of the swing. The rest were used for support. The timbers of the original swing are currently stored and partly exhibited at the Bangkok National Museum.

UNESCO was showing interest in the Giant Swing and Wat Suthat Temple in the background and eventually nominated it as a Heritage Site in 2005.

เสาชิงช้าสร้างขึ้นเมื่อเดือนเมษายน ปีพ.ศ. 2327 หลังการสถาปนากรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ได้ 2 ปี สำหรับใช้ประกอบพิธีโล้ชิงช้า ในพระราชพิธีตรียัมปวาย- ตรีปวาย ที่จัดขึ้นเดือนยี่ (มกราคม) ของทุกปี เพื่อต้อนรับพระอิศวรที่เสด็จมาเยี่ยมโลกตามคติความเชื่อของศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดู อันเป็นพระราชพิธีสำคัญหนึ่งในพระราชพิธี 12 เดือน ที่สืบต่อมาจากสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานี เสาชิงช้าเป็นเสาไม้ขนาดใหญ่มีความสูง 21.15 เมตร เสาไม้แกนกลางคู่ประกบด้วยเสาตะเกียบ 2 คู่ เป็นเสาหัวเม็ด ทำด้วยไม้สักกลึงกลม ที่โครงยึดหัวเสาทั้งคู่แกะสลักอย่างสวยงาม กระจังและหูช้างไม้เป็นลวดลายไทย ทั้งหมดทาสีแดงชาด ติดสายล่อฟ้าจากลวดลายกระจังด้านบนลงดิน เสาไม้ตั้งอยู่บนแท่นหินฐานกลมก่อเป็นฐานปัทม์ (ฐานบัวลูกแก้ว) ด้วยหินสีขาว ขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 10.50 เมตร พื้นบนปูกระเบื้องดินเผาสีแดง มีบันได 2 ขั้นทั้ง 2 ด้าน ตามแนวโค้งของฐานติดแผ่นจารึกประวัติเสาชิงช้าไว้ ความที่ทำจากเสาไม้ เมื่อผ่านกาลเวลาจึงชำรุดผุพังต้องบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์หลายครั้ง ครั้งล่าสุดเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2549 มีการถอดเสาชิงช้าคู่เดิมออกเปลี่ยนเป็นคู่ใหม่จนถึงปัจจุบัน

เดิมเสาชิงช้าอยู่ตรงหน้าเทวสถานโบสถ์พราหมณ์ จนสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ย้ายมาอยู่ ณ ที่ตั้งปัจจุบัน ใช้ประกอบพิธีโล้ชิงช้าเรื่อยมาจนถึงสมัยรัชกาลที่ 7 จึงเลิกพิธีไป แต่เสาชิงช้ายังถือเป็นโบราณสถานที่สำคัญ โดยกรมศิลปากรได้ประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นโบราณสถานสำคัญของชาติเมื่อวันที่ 22 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2492 ทุกวันนี้เสาไม้คู่สีแดงตามแบบสถาปัตยกรรมไทยกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์หนึ่งของกรุงเทพมหานคร ที่นักท่องเที่ยวนิยมมาเที่ยวชมและถ่ายภาพเป็นที่ระลึก ประกอบกับบริเวณโดยรอบมีสถานที่สำคัญหลายแห่ง เช่น วัดสุทัศน์เทพวราราม ศาลาว่าการกรุงเทพมหานคร และตึกแถวเก่าแก่ตั้งอยู่รายรอบ ทำให้บริเวณนี้เป็นย่านเมืองเก่าที่มีเสน่ห์เป็นอย่างมาก
