History:
Volubilis is a Roman city built on the former site of a Punico-Berber city, which was the capital of the kingdom of Mauretania, located in the Saiss plain in Morocco. Partially discovered nowadays, the ancient city hatches from the 3rd century BC. AD as a Punic establishment and developed rapidly from the moment it entered the Roman fold. The monumental adornment of the city developed particularly in the second century, following the economic enrichment of the region. Located in a region with rich agricultural potential, this city lived off the olive oil trade. Indeed in its ruins many oil presses are present. This enrichment is also reflected in private architecture by the construction of vast villas with beautiful mosaics, the city appearing as "a center of influence of Roman civilization in Mauretania Tingitane" according to Brahmi. The region, considered indefensible, was abandoned by the Roman imperial authorities in 285. The city, a Christianized urban community, then a Muslim city, continued to be inhabited for seven centuries. The Idrissid dynasty was founded there in the 8th century. In the 11th century the site was abandoned and the population was transferred 5 km away to the city of Moulay Driss Zerhoun. The city does not undergo significant degradation it seems until an earthquake in the middle of the 18th century. Subsequently, the ruins are used as a quarry, in particular for the constructions of Meknes. Identified later in the nineteenth century, the site has been part of the protected heritage of Morocco since 1921. The site has been the subject of archaeological excavations since the beginning of the twentieth century and only half have been found to date. The quality of the finds and of the site has resulted in its classification on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
