Description
ITALIANO

ENGLISH

The history of these locomotives began in 1941, with the initial project (65DE14) made by whitecomb locomotive works. These vehicles were produced in large quantities to satisfy various orders from different countries.

During the Second World War, a certain quantity of these locomotives were transferred to Italy for the relative war operations; at the end of the conflict, 50 machines remained in the Italian territory and were subsequently incorporated into the fleet of FS rolling stock, registered as Ne 120 (N for diesel locomotive, E for electric traction).
Starting from 1945, they covered different liveries: plum red with yellow band, isabella brown and the classic green wagon with yellow bands for shunting vehicles.
The locomotive, considering the historical period, had two powerful diesel engines of 209hp each, which powered the 4 electric traction engines via the electrical generators. These vehicles were not free from defects: the cylinder heads of the engines tended to break (a defect also found in locomotives of the same type delivered to other European administrations).
The FS therefore decided to carry out a refurbishment starting from the 70s: the two engines were replaced by a single OM type SEV, capable of delivering the same power as the two but with much higher reliability margins. The D143 was born, a successful and iconic locomotive for the Italian railways (especially for the typically American aesthetic style).
