Interface (Hammer Version)

Description
This map can be played at multiple difficulty levels and is my first all-Hammer map. It is based on a rather tricky map, "Interface", by Brave, but can be played by mere mortals if you ... well, try it, and you'll see what I mean. It's probably still too difficult for rank beginners, though. My goal for this map was to get up-to-speed on Hammer and make Brave's beautiful puzzle accessible to players who are not quite up to his skill level. Experts should head straight into the test chamber to play it the way Brave intended. Others might want to look around a little first to see what help is available.

For extra kudos, find the companion cube and take it with you to the exit.

Please report problems, including if you don't find it fun, and also I'd appreciate suggestions from Hammer experts for making the map better. My biggest problem right now is that I can't get light from observation rooms to spill into the hallway when the door is open but not when it is closed.

Oooh so it was on purpose. Well guess I need to figure out of my PC is just overheating or there is more to it. Thank you for quick response :)

BaRa.95, thanks for visiting. I'm afraid I can't tell you why the game lags on your PC. I built the map on a PC that would be laughed at today (2-core Athlon 64, WinXP, 4 gigs RAM). It runs fine on my HP Pavilion 15 Gaming notebook.

I don't like it when I have to die and reload the game because of a skill failure. So, I made it so that if you fall in the water you don't die, you just have to climb out, but your portals close and you can't shoot any new ones.

Its so heavy on my PC and it's pretty good one. Any reason why it is? My game laggs as I move mouse.

Grauerrat, thanks for visiting. It's a complicated map with a difficult puzzle at the core, so if you're not enjoying it you should move on. Try pressing the button that makes the puzzles easier and taking a tour of the observation chambers to look at the various parts of the puzzle. When you get back to the starting point, go around again and you'll find that the training chambers are open. Try to solve the puzzles in the training chambers first. If this goes well, you'll have a good chance at the overall puzzle. Remember the training puzzles and how you solved them and what part of the main puzzle you could see from the observation room nearby. That part of the overall puzzle is similar to the training puzzle and you can use the same general method to solve it. I hope this helps, but, again, if it's not fun then it's not worth your time. It's not about "difficulty", it's about the kind of map you enjoy.

Thanks for playing. I don't like maps in which players have to die over and over until they get some skill move right; hence the goo here just closes portals and stops you making any new ones. This kind of thing is easy to do in Hammer. I've been told that I made a mistake with the observation chambers and it's necessary to put a glass texture on the inside as well as on the outside, but I've not got around to fixing it yet.

A unique map. I have never seen the non-lethal goo or the observation rooms used like this beforre.
