USS Gearing (DD-710)

[ Historical Ship ]

This ship is the USS Gearing(DD-710), the first ship of Gearing-class destroyer.

Gearing class destoryer is the developmental type of the Allen M. Sumner class destroyer.
152 planned, 105 began to build, and 88 commissioned and served in Korean war, Vietnam war and more cold war era engagements.

As you can see from the above list of engagements(of Gearing class served), some of the Gearing classes were renovated(FRAM) in late 1950 and operated for a long time after the WWII, and all the Gearing classes were retired from the U.S. Navy in 1982.

However, the U.S. Navy's retired Gearing-class destroyers were mostly scrapped or be depleted as a target ship, but many of them were given to the Navy of the weak ally and continued their activities : ROK Navy, ROC Navy, etc.
