Description
German Class 627 DMU. In 1972, the Federal Railway Office in Munich approached Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK) and DUEWAG about developing a new series of DMUs to replace the aging fleet of railbusses. One-car (Class 627) and two-car (Class 628) variants were considered, with many parts coming from commercial truck production. There were two short production runs for the 627, one in 1974 and a slightly modified one in 1981 for a total of 13 units. Trials and operational reports were favourable, but the Federal Railway felt that the one-car variant was better replaced by regular busses. The two-car variant proved highly succesful, although full-scale production did not begin until 1985.

The 627s were phased out between 2001 and 2006, Koleje Mazowieckie purchased 7, 4 of which are still in operation.
