History:
Bois-Caïman is a remote place on the island of Hispaniola, present-day Haiti. Before the Bois Caiman ceremony, Vodou rituals were seen as an event of social gathering where enslaved Africans had the ability to organize. These meetings and opportunities to organize were considered harmless by white slave owners, therefore, they were permitted. It is also argued that Vodou created a more homogeneous black culture in Haiti. On the night of August 14, 1791, Dutty Boukman organized a political and religious ceremony there for a large number of slaves. Priestess Mambo plunges a knife into a sacrificed Creole black pig, and assistants drink its blood in order to become invulnerable. Boukman then ordered a general uprising. By bringing together the different African tribes in their quest for freedom, voodoo is thus a catalyst in the slave revolt in Santo Domingo. This uprising takes place the night of August 21 to 22 when the slaves of five houses burn them and massacre the whites, women and children included. For ten days, the northern plain is in flames. There are nearly 1,000 murdered whites, 161 sweets and 1,200 burnt coffee plants. Boukman advances to Cap-Français. The authorities retaliate and Boukman perishes in battle, at the head of his troops. His head is exposed in Cape Town because it is considered invulnerable to the slaves. Despite the response, the revolt is not defeated. Other leaders succeed Boukman: his lieutenants Jean-François and Biassou, as well as Toussaint who is not yet called Louverture.

Compatible with Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, NewFrontier. GATHERING STORM & RISE AND FALL ARE NEEDED.
