Story:

In 1866, the SS St Lawrence was laid down as the first screw propelled steamship for the River Line. In 1868, the SS St Lawrence was christened and launched and was fitted until completion in August of 1868. On her sea trials, news of her performance shocked her owners. Planned to be a single screwed liner with a service speed of 12 knots, her 5.5 knots was appalling. River Line desperately tried to fix the issue, but the best speed they got out of her was 7.8 knots. Sent back to her shipyards, she was re-engineered and reached a stunning 13 knots, much better than the 7 she reached on her maiden. After her horrible maiden voyage, which even resulted in the 2nd officer's death after a wave washed him overboard, she was sent back to the shipyard. Her upper class was completely torn out and replaced with steerage, a steam pipe added for her steam winches, and square-rigged sails on her 3rd mast. Her route was also changed, due to how badly she suffered on her maiden voyage. Instead of the Liverpool to Jersey City route, she was placed on the Liverpool to Norway route for four years. She was mentioned in a newspaper once that described her as a “floating eyesore” and that “her hull towers like the cliffs of Dover”. In 1873, she received more lifeboats and six saloon class cabins on her main deck. In 1879, she collided with a sailing vessel in fog just outside of Liverpool. All were saved, but the SS St Lawrence was refitted after the accident. In 1888, a large steamer of the Gem Line ran down and nearly sank the St Lawrence, with the discovery she would have sunk if the Gem Liner was going a few knots faster. Following the collision, the SS St Lawrence beached herself on Crosby beach. After she was inspected, she was declared a total loss and was broken up on that same beach.
