History:
Panama la Vieja, which is now the old town, was founded on August 15, 1519 by the conquistador Pedro Arias Dávila, with 100 inhabitants. The first European settlement on the Pacific coast, the fishing village quickly became a bridgehead for the exploration and conquest of the region of Peru and a transit point for gold and silver bound for Spain. The metals arrive from Callao by boat, then are transported by mule from Panama to Nombre de Dios where boats from Cartagena load them. Two years later, in 1521, the city acquired the title of Ciudad Real and a coat of arms by royal decree of Charles Quint. In 1621, the city was hit by an earthquake which destroyed the city. The prosperity of Panama becomes the object of many desires of pirates, including the famous Welsh pirate Henry Morgan. The Isthmus of Panama becomes important in the passage between the two coasts of America. The construction of the Panama Canal, imagined in the 16th century and completed in 1914, was of great benefit to the development of the country's economy and its infrastructure. During World War II, the presence of US civilian and military personnel increased with the construction of military bases. In the late 1970s until the 1980s, Panama became a point of banking attraction, especially in money laundering. In the 2000s, the city of Panama remained a major financial center. In 1997, the old town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
