Работы по созданию III поколения начались в 1985 году, что совпало со сменой индекса осваиваемого кузова типа седан из семейства моделей «Спутник», который в результате получил обозначение: ВАЗ-21099. Освободившийся индекс ВАЗ-2110 был присвоен основополагающей модели III поколения.

В отличие от предыдущего поколения, разработка данного началась с привычного типа кузова седан. Первый опытный экземпляр ВАЗ-2110 серии "0" появился в июле 1985 г. Макет следующего варианта носил обозначение "100" и отличался от первого незначительно. Макет серии "200" являлся более проработанным вариантом серии "100", с улучшенной аэродинамикой. В 1987 году был сформирован макет серии "300", образ которого стал окончательным. Семейство моделей построено на платформе «Гамма» — ВАЗ-2108. В ноябрьском номере журнала «За рулём» за 1990 год были опубликованы шпионские фото предсерийной модели, снятые на полигоне фирмы Porsche[4]. Серийный выпуск ВАЗ-2110 планировалось начать в 1992 году, однако из-за наступившего экономического кризиса эти планы сдвинулись на несколько лет. При серийном производстве отказались от одного из основных дизайнерских решений, заложенного изначально и являющегося неотъемлемой частью цельного образа моделей данного семейства: покрытия чёрным цветом рамок дверных окон, рамок боковых задних окошек/окон, нижних частей боковин кузова, дверей и бамперов. Также не стали применяться наружные зеркала заднего вида, крепящиеся к дверям под окнами (а не к углам оконных проёмов).

В едином стиле с данным семейством автомобилей был выполнен кузов IV поколения автомобилей повышенной проходимости ГАЗ/УАЗ — модели УАЗ-3160.

По сложившимся обстоятельствам, ВАЗ стал единственным заводом, выпустившим современное поколение легковых автомобилей для 1990-2000 гг. — ВАЗ-2110. Его ровесники-поколения других заводов по производству легковой автомобильной техники: ГАЗ-3103, АЗЛК-2143, ЗАЗ-1106 не получили развития.

Work on the creation of the third generation began in 1985, which coincided with the change in the index of the mastered sedan body type from the Sputnik family of models, which as a result received the designation: VAZ-21099. The vacated VAZ-2110 index was assigned to the basic model of the third generation.

Unlike the previous generation, the development of this one began with the usual sedan body type. The first prototype of the VAZ-2110 series " 0 " appeared in July 1985. The layout of the next version was designated "100" and differed slightly from the first. The layout of the "200" series was a more developed version of the "100" series, with improved aerodynamics. In 1987, the layout of the "300" series was formed, the image of which became final. The family of models is built on the "Gamma" platform-VAZ-2108. In the November issue of the magazine "Behind the Wheel" for 1990, spy photos of the pre-production model were published, taken at the Porsche training ground [4]. Serial production of the VAZ-2110 was planned to begin in 1992, but due to the economic crisis, these plans were postponed for several years. During mass production, one of the main design solutions that was originally laid down and is an integral part of the whole image of the models of this family was abandoned: the black coating of the door window frames, the frames of the side rear windows/windows, the lower parts of the body sidewalls, doors and bumpers. Also, external rear-view mirrors that are attached to the doors under the windows (and not to the corners of the window openings) were not used.

In the same style with this family of cars, the body of the IV generation of GAZ/UAZ cross — country cars-the UAZ-3160 model-was made.

Under the circumstances, VAZ became the only plant that produced the modern generation of passenger cars for 1990-2000 - VAZ-2110. Its peers-generations of other factories for the production of passenger cars: GAZ-3103, AZLK-2143, ZAZ-1106 have not been developed.
