Exe Estuary (Devon, UK)

Description
To play on this map, you need to enable 'Experimental Map Sizes'.
Here is how.

A 1:1 scale map of the Exe Estuary and the surrounding area of south-east Devon (England, UK), covering some 604 km² (24.5 x 24.5 km) or 233 sq mi (15.3 x 15.3 mi).

Based on late 19th century maps, the map stretches from the historic city of Exeter to the Victorian seaside resort of Exmouth, and from Sidmouth on the Jurassic Coast to Teignmouth on the edge of the English Riviera.

The area is home to the Avocet Line, the northern section of the Riviera Line (including the Dawlish sea wall) and the all but forgotten Sidmouth Railway.

Features
  • Detailed, 1:1 scale topography, including the Exe Estuary, Teign Estuary, rivers Otter, Sid, Clyst and their valleys, Haldon Hills, Exminster Marshes, and more.
  • Authentic, hand-placed settlements, ranging from the sprawling city of Exeter to tiny hamlets nested among the rolling hills of Devon.
  • Authentic, hand-built road network based on 19th century maps of the area.
  • Semi-authentic, hand-placed industry, including many real-world farms, tree plantations, quarries, paper mills. Balanced for gameplay and featuring some of the traditional industries of this part of Devon, such as fishing and livestock farming, thanks to the Industry Expanded mod (which is required to play on this map).

Good map, any chance of providing a link without the mods as the industry expanded is questionable to work correctly with the games latest update

This looks absolutely fantastic. Downloading immediately.

@Seriphyn,

I did consider that at the time. If I remember correctly, there is a certain threshold (25 of each building type or so) below which the towns/villages would never grow, or even re-grow if you demolish some of the buildings, which is why I decided against it.

Hi Claude,

As for the industries that are represented in the game, oil, steel, iron, coal and silver were, as far as I am aware, never produced in any meaningful quantities within the boundaries of the map. Anything else very much so.

The OS maps linked in the description, especially the large scale ones (6- and 25-inch) label everything down to individual buildings, including farms, factories, quarries etc. You will find that many of the industries I placed on the map correspond 1:1 to a real world counterpart.

https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/ is another resource I know of, where you can look up any of the towns/villages present on the map. Descriptions tends to mention the industries that existed in those places at the time.

> PS; note sure why, there are placeholder cubs in the wild, mostly in forest. I assume it's a bush or something.

Ah, those must be leftovers from some tree painting mod I was using.

Stunning!

Could you guide me to a ressource you might know that specify what products are local and what would be imported from outside the map ?

PS; note sure why, there are placeholder cubs in the wild, mostly in forest. I assume it's a bush or something.

Thanks a lot for sahring that one, I'm gonna have fun there

Absolutely stunning map and I love seeing my home town.
Thank you.

Great map. Have you considered a version where the smaller villages/towns are either entirely residential or residential/commercial?

Brilliant map, but after weeks of trying to reproduce the railway lines/stations as per Googlemaps, it's proved impossible, so I'm just going to make it up as I go!
