DDR V2 - Land Forces of the National People's Army (1956-1961)

This pack depicts the Uniforms of the Landstreitkräfte from 1956-1961. This is the first in a series of packs that will depict the Uniforms of the National People's Army throughout the Years.

The Land Forces of the National People's Army (German: Landstreitkräfte der Nationalen Volksarmee), or NVA, was the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Founded in 1956 in response to West Germany's founding of the Bundeswehr, the National People's Army would grow to be considered the best trained armed force of the Eastern Bloc. Unlike its predecessor, the Barracked People's Police, who's uniforms resembled that of the Red Army, the NVA's uniforms resembled the uniforms of Germany's Military Past. This was done deliberately in order to paint East Germany as the only true German State. Much like the Volkspolizei, the NVA opted to utilize the tri-color national emblem in its early uniforms, adopting the hammer and sickle in 1961. The NVA-Land went through several major uniform changes, most notably in 1961, 1974, and 1983.
