Grom-class Destroyer

Here is the ORP Grom (or ORP Błyskawica), a destroyer of the Polish Navy during WW2.


The Grom-class destroyers, sometimes called large destroyers or flotilla leaders, consisted of 2 ships, Grom and her sister Błyskawica. The ships were designed in Britain, and shared many similarities with the Tribal-class. The Polish Navy also planned to complete 2 more destroyers, Huragan and Orkan with an "improved" design over the previous 2., but the outbreak of WW2 cancelled these ships. They would have be the first modern warships buil in Poland. Following the invasion of Poland, Grom and Błyskawica, followed by a few other Polish warships evacuated to Britain to fight alongside the Royal Navy. Grom was sunk by a German bomber on May 4th, 1940 during the Norwegian Campaign. Błyskawica would go on to survive the war, having logged 146,000 nautical miles (270,000 km), escorted 83 convoys, damaged three U-boats, helped sink other ships, and shot down at least four aircraft. She was returned Poland in 1947 and would go on to serve until an incident, where a high-pressure steam pipe ruptured in one of her boiler rooms killed 7 sailors. She was reclassified as an anti-aircraft defense ship, and in 1976 she became a museum ship in Gdynia.
