No More Useless Items: Repentance

Description
Sometimes you'll get good items, sometimes you get not-so-good items. This random chance is all part of the thrill of The Binding of Isaac. Getting items in a run that are weak or overly situational or just not good for your current synergy can be disappointing, but it becomes a whole new level of frustrating when you get items that are near-guaranteed to be useless (or even outright detrimental) for the character you're playing as.

This mod gets rid of that frustration, by making it so all useless items are automatically re-rolled! This new version has been fully rewritten to work with Repentance.

General Features
  • Affects ???, Dark Judas, Azazel, The Lost, Lilith, Keeper, The Forgotten and Bethany.
  • Also affects the Tainted counterparts of the above characters, as well as Tainted Magdalene and Tainted Eden.
  • Each character has a list of blacklisted items which is unique to them.
  • Replaces pickups and items which are given directly to the player.
  • Replaces Collectibles, Trinkets, Cards, Runes and Pills.
  • If you manage to deplete the Item Pool when playing as The Lost or Tainted Lost, you'll start receiving Boom! from item drops rather than Breakfast.
  • Prevents blacklisted cards or pills from being given to you by the Deck of Cards or Mom's Bottle of Pills.
  • Fully supports true co-op.

Blacklisted Items

A full breakdown of which items are blacklisted for each of the affected characters can be found on this spreadsheet[docs.google.com].

However, here is an overview of the type of items which are generally blacklisted:
  • ???/Dark Judas/Tainted Judas/Tainted Bethany - items which give red health, spawn red hearts, or require red heart containers to feel the benefit.
  • Tainted ??? - the same items as regular ???, plus a few bomb-related items which don't work due to bombs being replaced with poops.
  • Azazel - items which grant the ability to fly, items which give spectral or piercing tears, and any items which are otherwise overridden by Azazel's starting short-range Brimstone laser.
  • Tainted Azazel - items which give spectral or piercing tears, and any items which are otherwise overridden by Tainted Azazel's narrow Brimstone laser.
  • The Lost - items which give flight, items which grant spectral tears, items which only trigger their effects when you receive damage, items which grant any type of health, and items which require more than half a heart of health to work.
  • Tainted Lost - So what do we think? Were the Repentance developers inspired by my original mod to give 'The Baleful' his "better items" mechanic (and The Lost his Birthright effect)? Probably not... but still! Anyway, similar items to the regular version of the character, but excluding items which are already blacklisted by the game due to not being "offensive" and any items which were only useless due to the guaranteed Holy Mantle.
  • Lilith - items which apply tear effects that can't be used by her Incubus familiar.
  • Tainted Lilith - items which apply tear effects that can't be used by her Gello familiar.
  • Keeper/Tainted Keeper - items which affect how much damage you take per hit, and items which require you to be at half a heart of health.
  • The Forgotten - tear-altering items which are overridden by both The Forgotten's bone club and The Soul's spectral tears, and items which don't work with either soul hearts or bone hearts.
  • Tainted Forgotten - items which grant flight, tear-altering items that do not affect The Forgotten's bone club, items which don't work with soul hearts, and items which don't work due to the detached nature of The Forgotten and The Soul.
  • Bethany - literally just Converter.
  • Tainted Magdalene - literally just Soul of Magdalene.
  • Tainted Eden - items which trigger on damage but don't trigger before they're re-rolled (or only have a chance of being triggered), and items which only trigger when the player is at specific levels of health. This includes items which give extra lives, most notably Dead Cat.

The decisions about which items to blacklist are sometimes subjective, but generally if an item is still useful but just very limited or situational (e.g. The Bible as The Lost) then it has not been blacklisted, while items which require specific synergies to become useful (e.g. Mitre for The Lost if they also have Alabaster Box) will still be blacklisted.

Co-Op Features
  • Pickups are only replaced if they're useless for all of the (currently alive) players in the party. Otherwise items are still prevented from being directly given to players they're useless for (e.g. with the D4).
  • Players are unable to pick up collectibles that are blacklisted for them but aren't blacklisted for one or more of their fellow players. This should particularly be helpful when the 'Curse of the Blind' effect is active.
  • Trinkets, Cards, Runes and Pills can still be acquired by players they're blacklisted for (as long as they're not blacklisted for everyone), because they can be dropped.
  • If a player picks up an unidentified Pill which is blacklisted for them, pop-up text will inform you that the Pill is useless so you can let another player take it.
  • Some Trinkets are completely redundant if Keeper/Tainted Keeper is present, and so these will not appear in any run where a Keeper is in the party.
  • Some items have different affects for Keeper/Tainted Keeper depending on whether non-Keepers are present in the party, generally relating to whether hearts turn into blue flies or not. These items will either be blacklisted for them or not, based on the configuration of the party.

Feel free to suggest if there are any items which should be blacklisted but aren't, or any items which have been included in the blacklist in error.

@ Ludwig_Lavender : I appreciate that you want it so soon! Right now I don't know how you're even meant to mark your mods as Repentance+ compatible, but once that's made clear I'll investigate whether this - and all of my mods - need any other updates.

Update mod for Repentance+ please

@ Voxel : Not a bug. Those items aren't outright useless as Keeper, they're just very situational.

Health Up items and pills can be used instead of picking up a coin while not at full health, but the main reason I didn't blacklist them is that if they weren't in the game and you picked up Dead Cat, it would be nearly impossible to get your coin hearts back.

@ cadetpirx : Well like I said, as far as I know it is compatible! I just haven't tested it myself to be sure.

I mean: Uh oh,No More Useless items is not compatible with Repentogon for some reason?
Flap_Jack  [author] 8 Apr, 2024 @ 12:41pm
@ cadetpirx : ... yes? Not sure if the "uh oh" is in reaction to my lack of certainty, or if you're disappointed that the 2 mods are (probably) compatible with each other.
Flap_Jack  [author] 8 Apr, 2024 @ 3:20am
@ cadetpirx : I don't know, but I can't think of any reason why Repentogon would break it.
