Description
WHAT REMAINS

Re-released for Summer 2021! Read more here.

What Remains is a small-squad PvE scenario for Arma 3, for 1-12 players. It features an open world with a variety of tasks, a custom currency and reputation system, several unique supports, and ambient civilian and guerilla presence.

This addon contains both the mod files and the mission/scenario, and has everything you need to play singleplayer (from the Scenarios menu in Arma 3) or multiplayer (via the in-game hosting option, or on a dedicated server).

The Story

Nearly 100 years after the second Great War, eastern Europe and the Balkans remain politically unstable.

The will of the NATO citizen and tax-payer to support foreign wars is at an all-time low. Nearly all conventional peacekeeping forces have withdrawn.

Task Force Nomad, one of the last remaining special operations detachments in the region, receives new orders. Most of the men will be rolled into other units, in other theatres. Some will take the chance to return home. A select few will remain behind, along with support personnel and limited hardware.

Officially, they are to act as protective detail during the final handoff to the transitional government, before boarding a private merchant vessel and accompanying several shipping crates of unused supplies to Italy, or perhaps France.

On the final evening of the operation, twelve armed men walk out to a line of waiting HEMTTs.

In Washington DC, an unremarkable intelligence officer in an unremarkable office types out a report.

Transition smooth. Acting prime minister has assumed control of local government. Power grid, water company, telecoms, and port facility nationalized for a period not to exceed 18 months. Cargo containers seized by customs; provisional government unable to assist. Operators rebooked on charter flight to Germany.

Lost cargo described as "non-perishable single-serve meals, medical supplies, prefab housing, assorted consumer-grade electronics". Containers to be written off as "combat loss / non-recoverable". Red team analysis describes the most likely outcome as "captured by non-combatant forces; organized crime; other."

He presses send. Moments later, he receives a digital signature from the commander. He closes the laptop and heads for the door.

--

In reality, the HEMTTs never arrive at the port. While en route their orders are changed, and they are redirected to an unpaved airfield. Sometime later, an unmarked civilian heavy lift bird lands at the airfield, and twelve men filter out.

The cargo containers are indeed filled with non-perishable single-serve meals, medical supplies, prefab housing, and assorted consumer-grade electronics. They also contain a number of hard-shell cases; in them are eight carbines, two long guns, two squad automatic weapons, accompanying ammunition and optics, explosive charges, and a slew of batter-operated equipment.

At a CIA black site in the Mediterranean, a different intelligence officer in a decidedly non-office-like room types out a different report:

Cargo and operators rerouted. Charter aircraft to proceed to destination. Port authority unable to locate paperwork for 7 (seven) missing twelve-foot cargo containers. Team in place. Comms established. Expect no further updates.

He gives the file an unassuming name, and tags it "COMINT//ORCON//NOFORN". It is not forwarded to a commanding officer. It is not signed.

He then picks up an encrypted radio and keys in a short message:

WHAT REMAINS GO. CSAT UAV LKL 35°09.12N|016°39.66 W. LOCATE AND DESTROY. USE OWN DISCRETION. OUT.

Gameplay

Your objective is to locate and destroy the CSAT UAV which is stored somewhere in the AO. Do this by finding and decrypting CSAT UAV terminals, or by earning enough goodwill with the locals to obtain a lead. Along the way, you should:

  • Eliminate enemy forces and destroy safehouses, picking up supplies and intel
  • Avoid civilian casualties and unnecessary destruction of property
  • Make contact with the locals to earn perks and passive benefits

If your Cred falls too low with any of the three factions, the mission will be a failure.

Blue, green, and purple zones indicate BLUFOR, INDEP, and CIVILIAN units, respectively.

Red zones indicate OPFOR units.

Orange zones indicate environment dangers, such as IED emplacements. Use caution when passing through these areas, or disarm or blow the IEDs in place for a reward.

The larger, double-encircled zones indicate a permanent presence; these areas provide a modicum of safety, and have vehicle services like refuel and/or repair. They are also used for respawning. Each faction leader will accept item turn-ins in exchange for Cred and Rep; simply place the desired items in the storage crate nearby.

BLUFOR accepts intel and electronics.

INDEP accepts cash, munitions, and some intel.

CIVILIAN accepts cash and medical supplies.

When you turn in items and complete objectives, your Cred and Reputation will increase with one or more factions.

Cred is a currency that can be spent on perks, which are found in the Supports menu. These are useful for finding higher-tier supplies, calling in fire, and tracking enemy locations, including your primary objective: the CSAT UAV.

Your Reputation indicates your overall standing with each faction, regardless of how much Cred you've spent. Earn enough Rep, and each faction will give you a useful Passive.

As you gather supplies and push back enemy forces, be on the lookout for CSAT UAV terminals; they give off a distinctive radio signal that will appear on-screen when you are close. If you find one, bring it back to the BLUFOR base and upload it at the command center. Each time you turn in a terminal, the location of the CSAT UAV becomes clearer; turn in enough of them, and the exact location can be pinpointed. Destroy the CSAT UAV to win.

Suggested Difficulty Settings

What Remains was designed to played on higher difficulty settings, with most assists disabled (such as spotting and unit markings on the map). We recommend these server settings, but feel free to adjust them to your own play style.
