R.S.F Poseidon 12

Description
Here is everything you saw in the video, the R.S.F series. I decided to release them together because the theme is very consistent :D R.S.F stands for Retro Space Flight.

This one is the bombshell.

If you are only interested in how to fly this, skip to the Placement and Control paragraphs. That's all you actually need to read.

INTRO (Just some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that you can skip reading if you are not interested)

This is the second build I started in this R.S.F series (After Endurance) but the last I finished. Took me a long ass time.

Heavily focused on the experience. When I started, I wanted to do it the ‘Rocket’ way. Fortunately, for this game world, my high school level physics and math are barely good enough to do some 'rocket science'. Searched up the fuel efficiency and we are good to go. For anyone interested, I will put the equations I got down below. Not sure they are 100% correct. It was easier to just do a flight test and what I got seems to be accurate.

But it turns out my effort was pretty much wasted. The result from the calculation suggests that: in the default solar system, SERIAL STAGING IS STUPID…… yeah, stupid is what it is. The fuel efficiency is so good that pretty much anything can fly into space. Well, I guess the reason KEEN did it this way is understandable. Pretty sure letting the game physics suppress most players’ creativity is not what they want. The only downside is that my overthinking and extra effort are not rewarded. This turned out to be a fashion build after all.

FLIGHT PLAN

Since the vanilla game has he 100 m/s speed cap, that’s what we are sticking with. With this speed cap, Orbital flight is doable but very frustrating. So long story short, there are three stages: First stage, depends on the load, the rocket accelerates straight up, with full thrust for about 200 meters and 4 seconds at the start. Second stage, it then maintains maximum velocity for the rest of the flight. The whole burn will last to 30000 meters (approximately 98000 feet), at which point the booster separates, CM thrusters ignition and it enters the third stage. 4 large thrusters under the booster are sufficient enough to carry the weight of fully loaded containers, so, bring whatever you want. Extra weight will only affect the acceleration stage, but not by any significant amount that you will notice.

PLACEMENT

Just put this build on ice, that’s what I usually do. The rocket itself is printable. But obviously, the launchpad is not. Never tested this, but the rocket can launch by itself without the pad (I hope).

CONTROL

Quite automatic. On toolbar 1, press 2 to turn on the Launch countdown timer. Then press 1 to start the countdown. Cameras are there for your viewing pleasure, they don’t do anything :D. You do not need to steer the rocket or touch anything, only if you want to abort the launch. Abort launch by pressing 9. This will stop all countdowns.

The timer starts with a 60-sec countdown, here is what’s gonna happen.
-0050 Tower bridge to Command module retracts.
-0020 Fuel port disengage. The wired connection with the launchpad is terminated. Both sides are now running internal guidance. LAUNCH CANNOT BE ABORTED AFTER THIS POINT!
-0015 Antenna switch.
-0008 Booster ignition.
-0000 Liftoff.

The booster will work its magic to 98000 feet, then automatically separates and drop back to Earth. Parachute installed.

You can then turn on the Command module thruster manually through 7. BE SURE TO FIRST TURN OFF DAMPERNER AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE CURRENT TRAJECTORY. Detached parts may smack you from behind :0.

EQUATIONS

Now the part where I spent my barely working math skill and unwanted love into.

f is the maximum thrust force.
v is the max velocity you want to travel at.
m is your ship mass.

The first stage (acceleration):

Travel time:
t=(vm)/(f-gm)

Distance traveled during this stage:
s= (g^2m)/(2(f-gm))

Fuel cost:
Fuel=fvm/(1244.8(f-gm))

The second stage (constant v):

The following equations only work under constant g. So after reaching the height where g starts to decrease, you will need to calculate separately for each interval. This is the point where I decided a flight test works better. Don’t worry, because honestly, the fuel you used in the first stage is still more the sum of all the rest of this flight.

S here is the distance during the interval.

Distance traveled during this stage:
S=(g^2m)/(2(f-gm))
(basically minus the distance you traveled in the first stage)

Travel time:
t=(s-(g^2m)/(2(f-gm)))/v
(was it so easy)

Fuel cost:
fuel=(gvm^2)/(2489.6(f-gm)

As I said, did not double-check, not professional in physics either, and it wasn’t useful in the end anyway.

Enjoy!:D
