In 1996, the three-passage gate of Zhongshanmen（中山门） was changed to the entrance of the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway into Nanjing City.

In order to facilitate traffic inside and outside the city, another 1,600-meter double-lane road tunnel was opened on both sides of the city gate.
