Area History
The Surlari islands were originally inhabited by the Norse during the Erikson expeditions of the 9th Century. Originally called 'Suursaari', meaning 'Small Island.' After being abandoned by the Norse-Vikings in the tenth century, the island was left to rot until the discovery of the United States. The Island was rediscovered in 1803 by Canadian Fishermen, where a brief conflict between the British North American Colony and the United States was sparked. The conflict lasted for three days, and led to the US-British North America border being redefined, with the island being declared US Property. After the island was successfully won over, the United States assigned the area as a temporary reserve to try and encourage American settlers to travel westward. After being an official reserve for over thirty years, the island was re-colonized by American Settlers, forcing the First Nations on the island to travel West to official reserves in Missouri, and Ohio.

By the time of the US Civil War, the island had an estimated population of over 300, with small settlements popping up across the island. Small wooden dockyards appeared as the island became known for its booming cod industry, which promoted further settling to the East. The island was briefly captured by Confederate Forces on April 3, 1865 where the island would act as a staging ground for a full-scale invasion of the Eastern USA. Fortunately, Confederate Forces surrendered on April 9th, 1865; Where the forces who remained on the island would eventually settle down and form logging companies in the southern portion of the island. By the turn of the century, the island had a rough population estimate of around 1,200.

When the First World War came into play, the island had been left to the sidelines. Fisherman's boats were claimed by the US Navy in the later half of the war to be melted down for scrap metal to be sold to the British, and some were even repurposed to act as medical vessels to transfer British soldiers to their homeland. By the end of the war, the island had nearly been completely converted from a fishing economy to a logging economy.

As the 1920s roared, the island's ports were repurposed by Mafia Gangsters to be used as a smuggling depot. The island's isolated and mostly insignificant nature lead to the island being a safe place for Canadian Alcohol to be smuggled into the United States. By the 1930s, the island had a population of well over 4,000, with many of its inhabitants thriving in the post-depression era. Fishermen thrived in the economy as logging businesses suffered, many of which were forced to shut down. Local trade increased and the island became well-known for it's rapidly urbanizing hills. The rapid urbanization became a significant issue for the island, when a local bylaw was passed in 1934 which stated that the island could not install any form of industrial facility such as a factory without a 90% vote from the population. This bylaw which became known as 'Richter's Law' was eventually scrapped when the US entered WW2 in 1941.

When the US Entered the Second World War, the town had seen an economic boom. The fishing industry saw a significant rise as the US asked for any and all food or crop donations to help the troops overseas. Fresh roads were created out of dirt as ferries began to transport important lumber supplies to the mainland. When President Roosevelt was granted emergency powers, the island's local bylaw was disregarded and three wartime industrial centers were built. One would later become Johnson's Steelworks, which was owned and operated by Montgomery J. Johnson and his son, George Johnson.
The second would become a Weapons plant, owned by the Browning Arms Company and operated by the Hilton Family. The third would eventually become abandoned, operating as a concrete plant during the Second World War. The island's economy boomed as the Second World War progressed, with the town of Suurkyla being promoted to a status of an 'emerging city'. Kiskinkyla was promoted from a small hamlet to a town, and emerged beyond its logging past to a future promoted by rapid growth, and urbanization. Catholic preachers stated that the war had made the small island lose it's cultural heritage, and lead to several anti-war protests, and even hangings of black individuals, who were promoted as 'Conspirators to the Devils War.' The mass violence that was promoted by the Church in the region led to multiple US National Guard deployments to the island, with the last taking place at the end of war in 1945.

When the war ended, the island's activity dulled down. The population capped at around 40,000 people with the majority of the population having left from the big city in search of cheaper land. Work on the island became a big issue, with many forcing themselves to take ferries and trips to New York, where many would take their place in the Stock Market. Cars became an important import, with many citizens choosing to buy newer, up-to-date cars in bulk for their neighbours. Those that refused, were always granted cheaper options through purchases of old, used cars from the 1930s and 1940s.

In 1951, the island became recognized as an official part of New Jersey, and was granted a publicly funded police department, which recruited 50 officers to police the island. Now in its cultural boom, the island faces a new controversy; The fall of the logging industry.
