You will power down EVERYTHING and uncouple all ships in every single bay causing them to bang and explode when you fly around.
The asteroid miner ship (long like a hotdog) Is ONLY viable in space. if you unpark it while in atmosphere it will fall to the ground and good luck ever getting it docked again.
You OBVIOUSLY cannot uncouple a part of the main ship without being in space.
There is a main cockpit to fly this thing, a cockpit that will uncouple/couple the ships, a cockpit to remote control the Spike flight. A separate cockpit in the lower ring (with a glass room and two cryo tanks that use main ship hydrogen to refill) that does Lower ring only landing gear, parachutes, thrusters, solar array, (something else not sure yet) and uncouple/couple with main ship.
