History:
Andorra, a European microstate located in the Pyrenees, is a sovereign principality whose origins date back to the Carolingian era. Its history is closely linked to that of Spain and France, which have always respected its independence. Although tradition attributes the creation of the principality to Charlemagne, Andorra was populated from prehistoric times and the ancient people of the “Andosins” are mentioned in ancient sources. The independence of Andorra was nevertheless recognized for the first time in the Carolingian era, when it formed a State of the March of Spain, intended to protect the empire from Arab invasions. Long isolated and sparsely populated, Andorra has cultivated original customs, notably with its age-old system of administration, which shares the throne between the head of the French Republic and a Spanish bishop and his "Council of the Earth" , the oldest European parliament. During the second half of the 19th century, the principality nevertheless experienced very strong opposition between the conservatives and the supporters of democratization and opening up to tourism. In the twentieth century, the construction of infrastructures such as ski resorts, roads and hotels, finally overturned Andorra which became a major tourist and commercial center, thanks to very low taxes on certain consumer products, more expensive in the rest of Europe.
