Enhanced Portraits

Description

The default portraits might not bug many people, but I found them a bit distracting. Figured I'd share the changes in case anyone else felt the same.

  • Adjusts all 37 character portraits with a consistent style. 9 are selectable when starting a freeroam game, the rest are NPC-only.

  • Slight edge blur, directing more attention to the center where the face is.

  • Desaturated edges, further directing attention to the center and toning down some of the background color.

  • The average color of the image is used as the ambient lighting which is applied to the portrait to improve the color balance on some faces so they look like they belong against the background.

  • Lightened shadows which were too strong and distracting from reading the faces.

When i added this and started a new game, it literally took the option of choosing a portrait away and starts you off with the default dude. Uninstalled it. problem is still there. Ummmmm.

It's all good and thanks for creating it. I'll stick with the default style. I don't really look at them much anyway. Not until I'm ready to hunt them down. :)

@HunterKiller: Nope. You'll have to read the page's description to see what the goal of the mod was if you're not sure. It's not something I expect everyone to care about, but that's the great thing about mods being optional. :)

Is the before & after in those screens, backwards?

Don't like the game's portraits at all really. :/ Still waiting for a mod that brings in some decent ones.

@Lucifer: I probably could reproduce their art style for the portraits and add more, but I'm satisfied with the existing ones and not sure it's worth the time. Have heard of other people that were possibly creating new portraits, but not sure if they're still working on them.

Sweet, thanks for the help! I'm gonna enjoy hunting down and wiping out the Syndicate as Robocop!

First, you should keep in mind that the images you convert to DDS should have a width and height that are each a power of 2. So 64x128 or 256x256, etc. The portraits themselves are 256x256, so that is the size you'll want to be sure to use. If you don't have photoshop or something, then you can setup a portrait image in any image editor you have available, then save it and convert it to DDS with http://www.xnview.com/en/xnconvert/ though XnConvert has terrible DDS support it should at least spit something out that SPG2 can use.

Any suggestions on what to use? Tried to convert a picture I pulled off deviant art to DDS with Paint but it either doesn't show up at all, or if I try to replace another picture but keep the name of the one I replaced in case it is a scripting issue, it just shows a black square and crashes the game.
