[OLD] Yooka & Laylee

Description
NOTE: This mod is being remade in the future, stay tuned for a more polished version of the character with better sprites

Yooka: Hey Laylee, we seem to have ended up in a totally different game altogether. Some kind of fighting game with other animals. Oh and that one guy who offered us a quest that one time. Oh, and a bunch of other characters from other video games as well as some hamburger chucking clown god.

Laylee: We did it, we finally joined Smash.

Yooka: Uh, Laylee, this doesn’t look like Smash. It seems to be some game called “Rivals of Aether”.

Laylee: Oh really? Well that’s a bummer. I have been storing up a bunch of one liners to say after winning fights in Smash! Was intending to use a different one depending on our opponent.

Yooka: Well, Capital B. doesn’t seem to be doing much after our last game, we might as well try and make the most of it here.

Laylee: Cool, what moves do we have?

Yooka: Well, we carry most of our moves over from our last adventure and even get a few back from the first game! I have very stubby arms and I can’t exactly punch but thanks to my really long tail I have a decent attacking option so I swing my tail at enemies to attack.

Laylee: I chip in with wing strikes every now and then too!

Yooka: Since when did your wings become so… stretchy?

Laylee: I think the modder may have taken a few liberties with our abilities.

Yooka: Well, our signature ability, the roll is still in tact. When rushing across the stage, pressing the attack button will see me curl up into a ball and roll at enemies, this does a fair bit of damage and knocks them back. Laylee gets on my back and runs backwards to help my momentum.

Laylee: Running backwards? Isn’t that how you’re normally supposed to run?

Yooka: No

Laylee: Huh? You learn something new every day, I’ve never really needed to run when I can already fly!

Yooka: Anyway, most of our attacks are tail and wing swipes of varying differences. Up tilt sees me crouch and spike my tail upwards, the down tilt launches the opponent and can be chained into aerial combos. Laylee gets to provide the finisher unless I’m crouching. She also attacks above and in front of us in the air. I also attack with my tail in the air to hit unsuspecting foes. There’s also the option for me to turn into a ball in midair for an additional attack, it’s a nice combo with down tilt!

Laylee: What about down special.

Yooka: We have the buddy slam of course

Laylee: Oh yeah, that move was so handy in Impossible Lair for finding all of those T.W.I.T coins that were hidden throughout our adventure!

Yooka: Ugh, don’t remind me, I still have nightmares over all those Paywalls even to this day!

Laylee: Well, this move is pretty useful above certain foes and since I can carry Yooka up very high we can launch it from a high vantage point if we want to!

Yooka: We also have the rest of our moves from Impossible Lair. Neutral Special sees me stick out my tongue to reel in enemies, if it connects, Laylee fights back with a wing strike.

Laylee: Doesn’t your tongue stretch for longer than that?

Yooka: Apparently its called “Balancing”. I could easily pick the opponent up from halfway across the stage but the modder has decided not to allow me to.

Laylee: This modder seems to be making circumspect decisions. Are we their first characters or something?

Yooka: Side special sees us spin together, it’s a pretty powerful move.

Laylee: Couldn’t we only do that in the air?

Yooka: I’m not complaining about being able to do it on the ground. Plus it’s a great horizontal recovery tool for getting back onto the stage.

Laylee: Well, that’s all our moves from the Impossible Lair, what else have we got?

Yooka: Up Special is easy, Laylee flies me back up onto the stage?

Laylee: Really, that’s boring! I have a better idea, that’s take one of those Boom Blooms from The Impossible Lair and have it launch us back into the stage!

Yooka: You know what? That is a better idea, let’s make that our up special!

Laylee: I do know for our down special I get the Super Sonar from the first game back. So glad to finally have this ability again.

Yooka: Laylee attacks by launching a supersonic sound wave that covers a wide range around us, allowing us to hit foes behind us as well as above and below us. If you ask me, it seems a bit overpowered.

Laylee: Yeah, it seems like the modder took that into account. The move doesn’t do very much damage and provides zero knockback. But hey, at least it will destroy their hearing!

Yooka: Certainly stuns them, and the closer we are to the target the better this move is as it does more damage and stuns them for longer.

Laylee: I can even support Yooka in midair for a moment while I do it!

Yooka: It’s hard to hold on to you when everything is so loud.

Anyway, I don’t know how powerful we are as fighters. I guess we’re going to have to find out. They have apparently set up support with us with Kirby, Abyss Runes, Miiverse, Hikaru, Mt. Dedede and Pokemon Stadium but in the actual fight, maybe we’re too weak or too strong?

Laylee: I guess all those people in the comments below will be able to give us a better idea of how strong we actually are. And maybe I can learn about more fighters in the “Workshop” and come up with some more unique win quotes for when we win against them!

Just a note: due to overall feedback on this mod I intend to remake it in the future with new sprites and reworking momentum into particular mechanics. This will have to do for now.

Added the Golden Tonic skin from Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (or close to it) as well as a new win quote for Laylee.

Down special now has Extra hitpause on the final hit to make it a more useful move.

Character sprites have now all been resized and hitboxes adjusted. Hopefully this make the character much more playable now!

Completely missed that jab was misalinged in the testing. I'll work on resizing everything to make it easier to hit opponents as a long term goal but its going to take a bit of time to resize everything and readjust the hitboxes to match. My thinking was that two squares high would be the ideal height but looking at the main Rivals cast they are a slight bit higher so might resize it so that Yooka is two squares high with Laylee being whatever height she ends up being from the resprite.

still needs a lot of work, but for what it is, it's very impressive !!
keep it up, cant wait to see what's next
