WAC AW101 "Merlin" (Unofficial) Normal

The AgustaWestland AW101 (former designation: EC101) is a British-Italian-made transport and multipurpose helicopter of modern times. The prototype was flown in 1987, and the machine reached full combat readiness between 1997 and 1999. The helicopter - in the Merlin HM1 version - has an overall length of 19.53 metres and a main rotor diameter of 18.59 metres. Propulsion is provided by three Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM332-01 engines, each producing 2,100 hp. Its maximum speed in level flight reaches approximately 310 km/h. The helicopter has a classic layout with a single main rotor and a propeller on the tail boom.

Development of the current AW101 began in the late 1970s, when both the British and Italian navies concluded that they needed a successor to the slowly ageing Westland Sea King. As a result of these discussions, a special consortium was formed in 1979 to develop a new machine. After many years of work and research, a complicated and heavy machine was created, which, however, had a very extensive avionics, a large range and a high service life. It should be added, however, that the implementation of the machines into the line was not without problems, which were, however, systematically - though often belatedly - solved.
