Class description
Cruisers (C*) are a large warship class, which often bring all disciplines into one warship. Being jack-of-all-trades, they're masters of none and will usually be outperformed by more specialized warships. However, they carry a heavier armour than most destroyers and frigates. Their large powerplants and spacious hulls provide ample provisions for large (rail assisted) guns and LAMS. The following styles are recognised: The CL class of light cruisers evolves from the frigate line and ultimately leads to the Dreadnought style Battleships. The CG class of guided missile cruisers stems from the missile destroyers, the CA class of heavy cruisers combine both AA and Anti-sub warfare into one hull and the CC class of battlecruisers are jack of all trades with a wide assortment of weapons and usually the largest hulls and most powerful engines.

The ship
As a continuation of the gun line of ships, the Vanguard is a step up compared to the Valkyrie class frigate. The Vanguard, while slower than the Valkyrie, gains one more gun and now has a ABXY setup of twin 300mm turrets. The guns themselves are upgraded too, having a higher rail assist and higher rate of fire. Coupled with thicker armour and more powerful engines, the Vanguard is a solid upgrade to the Valkyrie. The ship is designed as a counter to light to medium armoured warships and airships. It does come with a limited AA suite, but it will be outperformed by more specialized units in this area. The Valkyrie does have a sizeable torpedo armament, consisting out of four deck-mounted quad launchers. A small central VLS completes the array of weapons.

The Vanguard puts firepower over protection, however. Its armour, shielding and LAMS are relatively small, in due part due to the large amount of power required for the main guns as well as the need to keep a relatively compact form factor. She fairs best against comparable sized warships and airships, and will struggle against heavy armour or fast fliers.

After the Vanguard, the line splits towards the Dreadnoughts, which are gun based, heavily armoured behemoths. Alternatively, a fusing with the missile branch leads to the Battlecruiser line, which combines heavy firepower with anti-ship missiles in a relatively thin armoured warship.

v77. Vanguard has received numerous updates. The armour has been reworked, with a belt added, as well as reinforced protection around the ammo stores, engineroom, AI and processing rooms. The shell has been updated as well. With the new update, survivability is higher and combat effectiveness is slightly increased against targets with low freeboard.
