Investigate the Mage Tower

Description
The Mage Tower has gone silent; strange occurrences are reported in the area. A young wizard and her companions are sent to investigate.

I can't figure out how to go from Mage Tower level 3 to 4. I thought it had to do with the button outside the room, but when I click on it, nothing changes/happens.. So, what am I doing wrong?

The fire elementals are a "gate"; you need to solve the puzzles on that map to clear them. Basically work your way around the map deactivating all the other portals, when that is complete they are "teleported" away. (AKA a kill command gadget is activated.)

Even with all those fire elementals to fight. At second level, I can't seem to be able to do a darn thing!!
