Description
Electromotive Division SD70M

2/16/22, minor improvements to startup systems.

Specs
This is arguably the most realistic and detailed diesel locomotive replica to have been uploaded to the workshop as of the release date, and the boys at EOS have more coming. This one has the most realistic controls we have ever offered, a cab shape only achievable through the miracle of .xml and pivots, a mock air compressor that kicks on to refill the air reserves, and a realistic horn achieved through messing with the sirens. She currently pulls better than any other locomotive i have uploaded, pulling the brick(127K units) at an astonishing 35 mph. Her traction control systems make wheel slip an issue of the past and the realistic dynamic brakes sure are a spectacle. She utilizes the latest version of "Engine Slave Systems" 1.4 and has been outfitted with the Brand new "LocOS" displays, which can be found on my workshop page. This locomotive is sure to impress, and stay tuned for more impressive locomotives to join the UP collection, such as her sister coming next week from Festive Lad, the SD90MAC.

Lore
By the early 90's the long fought battle for the top of the locomotive market between General Electric and the General Motors Electromotive Division had ended, with a clear and decisive GE victory. The SD50 and SD60 locomotives were put to shame by GE's technologically superior Dash 8 and Dash 9 series of locomotives. Although SD50 and SD60 reliability was fair, it was nowhere near the reliability customers expected from EMD and did not compensate for their lower horsepower. During the 90's and early 2000's GM was on the decline, living off of subsidies from the US government, having been outclassed by superior foreign imported vehicles in the automotive industry. Because of this, their Electromotive division suffered as well. They did not have the funds to put out out the same kind of quality they were known for during the 60's through early 80's. Despite this they persevered and released their SD70 baseline in 1992. The most popular option was the SD70M, the variant with a wide cab. EMD's direct competitor to the SD70M was GE's Dash 9, which outsold the SD70M 2387/1609. A decisive win for GE. The SD70M was far from a bad locomotive, in fact Union Pacific favored the SD70M over the Dash 9, buying the majority of the SD70Ms produced. they continue to run them near 30 years later. Many of the SD70Ms would be converted to the SD70M-2, the SD70ACe's brother using DC motors. From the SD70M also arrived the SD70MAC which was the SD70M with AC traction motors.

In 2004 EMD was put up for sale by GM, and bought in 2005 and sold to Greenbriar, Berkshire, who renamed EMD "Electromotive Diesel". Under Greenbriar, Berkshire, the SD70ACe was released along with many of it's near relatives. Production of the SD70M had halted in 2004 after the sale, in favor for the ACe. The SD70M continues to be used and rebuilt to this day, however some class 1 railroads are selling them off to smaller railroads, storing them or scrapping them. They are still a common sight on the rails to this day, especially among union pacific. While both the ACe and SD70M have ceased production for the US market, the SD70 name still lives on with the SD70ACe tier 4.

Operation Manual

Startup:
Starting the locomotive is a relatively easy task. First, flip on all the large breakers in the Breaker cabinet. Then check the isolation switch. The isolation switch isolates the prime mover (engine) from the electric generator in order to safely and easily start the prime mover. Make sure the isolation switch is set to "start/stop/isolate" before powering up or shutting down the engine. Once the generator is isolated, there are 2 way to go about starting the locomotive. the easiest is the auto-start button located in the cab. by holding this for about 1 second, the auto startup sequence will begin. First it will prime the engine with fuel, then start up. The second way to start the engine is to go directly to the prime mover and start it. First flip on the engine room light and "start from prime mover" switch. On the starboard(right) side of the locomotive is 2 access panels. Behind them is the manual starter. First prime the engine until the "engine primed" light turns green, then press the start button. The engine will not start if not primed. One the engine has been started, wait about 8 seconds before setting the Isolation switch to "run".

Operating the locomotive:
With the prime mover started and the generator connected to the prime mover, you are now able to operate the locomotive. sit down in the engineer's seat and flip on the 3 switches labeled "run, fuel pump, and generator field". "Run", tells the locomotive that controls are being received from the control stand and not another locomotive, The fuel pump activates the secondary fuel pump, and "generator field", activates the electrical field of the generator, allowing the traction motors to be powered.

Now its time to get acquainted with the controls. The reverser decides the direction of the locomotive. Pushing it forward to 1 means it goes forward, and pulling it back to -1 means reverse. anywhere in between is neutral. The reverser cannot be moved if "Dynamic Brakes" or "throttle" is applied. By pulling back the throttle lever, the generator throttles up and the traction motors are powered. Throttle between 0 and -.3 is zero throttle and will allow the reverser to be moved. Throttle below -.3 will activate the dynamic brakes. These are used to maintain speed down hills or slowly braking but not to a complete stop. They serve little practical purpose in game since brake pads cannot be warn out the same way as they can IRL. the brake lever controls the brakes for the locomotive. By flipping up the switch "apply brakes to rolling stock", the braking output will be sent over composite channel 5 to all rolling stock that is compatible.

Slave system
This locomotive utilized the latest standardized Engine Slave Systems 1.4, and is mostly compatible back to 1.0 in all regards but dynamic brakes and rolling stock brakes. When the run switch is up, the locomotive is set to "master" and will broadcast it's current controls across connectors and over antenna. In order to turn a locomotive into a slave, flick the "engine run" switch to the off position. Now the slave systems have been set to receive controls rather than send. It will also transmit the controls it receives over radio and connectors. Then select whether or not it is receiving from the front connector, rear connector, or radio signal (defaults to front). If it is receiving from radio, make sure the master unit and slave are both on the same frequency. If the locomotive is facing away from the master, make sure to invert direction. A red light will come on to show that it is successfully inverted.

Bonus
Upcoming projects and their status ordered by priority:

1-ES44AC- basically complete, needs new truck decorations and a paint job

2-SD40- Body being detailed by @Festive Lad (will be used as base for SD40-2, GP40, GP38, and SD38-2 as well)

3-SW1500 Rebuild- Frame Completed, needs detailing and systems

4-SD70ACe V3.0- Idea on the table, possible frame flushed out

Sounds a lot like you're using infinite electric @Baby_sheep_killer

hey I'm having i problem with the train, whenever i spawn it in it doesn't stop blaring the horn, but it only started when i started up the locomotive the first time i loaded it in. do you know what the problem is?

@shamumcadams , thats weird, i started it on my first try. make sure you are starting the locomotive from wherever you selected.

(BTW i did read the operations manual multiple times, but it just wouldn't move)

i Can't get it to move, I've tried both starting methods, with and without infinite fuel, rolling start from another train, it just wont go

I know how... But how do you make these things, I can Only use Focus, I dont have any sorta Movement freedom in the Editor, I cant move using WASD. Im just kinda confused how you still make these if you can now only use Focus.
