Here's some trivia about the song if you want to be 'cultured': The song was composed by Joan Baez and Ennio Morricone as a tribute to Nicolas Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian anarchists who were accused of murdering a guard and a payroll clerk. They were executed on August 23, 1927, after massive social uproar to free them. Indeed, as time went on, the historical consensus shifted towards their innocence and on the 50th anniversary of their death it was Michael Dukakis, governor of the state of Massachusetts, declared they had been wrongfully tried and executed by the state.
