Preamble:

After over 5,000 hours of playing PVP ark, I knew it was time to settle down. PVP Official and Unofficial is very demanding when it comes to your time. Unfortunately, the only other options are playing a different game or playing PVE Ark. I tried playing PVE and even tried playing Singleplayer. Ark is still ark but it turns into a breeding simulator and a grind. Breed for mutations to be able to do certain bosses or OSDs or even Genesis Missions or running drops over and over for the chance to get the bp you need. Yeah, you can turn up breeding/maturation rates or increase loot quality. But even then, you are turning a beloved game into just a fast forward playthrough and has untold implications on the rest of your gameplay, i.e. if you want to do a boss just hatch and raise for 4 hours with instant grow, get your mutations then raise 20 babies and then you are ready. To me it was no fun. I figured there had to be a better way to bridge the gap between PVP and PVE play. But nothing available fit the bill to bridge the gap between PVP and PVE. Looking around, there are paid options for big servers that could offer a solution – but there is nothing for the little guys, the solo players, the groups playing on their own server, the people that just want to raid a bit but still be able to go to sleep at night without having to worry about their base.

What is this Mod:

In lieu of this, I have decided to work the past couple of months to create completely filled out lootboxes. the mod does not actually build the bases for you, but it gives you an opportunity to build a base, spawn one item, stuff it inside and then raid for it. The loot generated is based off of playing on a server similar to smalls (2.5x – 5x) and does work with stacking mods. It also gives you the opportunity to get BPs, pre crafted items (varying quality and amounts), and even Dinos or Dinos with Mutations! This will completely simulate, as best as possible, raiding a base and obtaining real loot, so you won’t get all the bps you will need just one place. All items quality scales with the official difficulty. This is the general idea behind the mod but check out below for the individual details.

What is in the Mod:

Quick notes about the boxes that contain items:
  1. DO NOT OPEN A BOX WITH A FILLED INVENTORY – YOU WILL LOSE ITEMS IF YOU GET BLACK BOXED. NO BOX WILL GIVE YOU MORE THAN 300 ITEMS.
  2. Quality scales with difficulty. It normalizes at max difficulty to close to official rates. Raising the difficulty above that will give you OP loot, while playing difficulty one will see you getting almost nothing ascendant related
  3. Nothing will be the same other than the category. If you spawn in a weapons box, don’t expect to get 5 snipers every time. You could get none, you could get one, or you could get 10
  4. There are varying levels of the boxes: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Metal, Stone. This is to give you the chance to create different difficulties of bases or events and give an apt reward
  5. Amounts of rewards is to replicate close to smalls/trios servers. This is to make the boxes not OP and if you want to have it give more loot, its easier to double the amount of boxes than decrease the amount of loot given.
Box Types:
  • Base (Contains all the below boxes and random amounts of dino boxes to simulate raiding an actual base)
  • Armor - Flak, Hazmat, Riot, Fur, Cloth
  • Tribute – Tribute Items and Artifacts
  • Chibi – random chibis, have to cook in the forge for a specific chibis
  • PVP – Various PVP Items
  • Consumables – Consumables such as meat, jerky, kibble, med brews, veggie cakes.. etc
  • Saddles - saddles
  • Structures – foundations, crafting, tek
  • Ammo – grapples, bullets, c4…
  • Defensive Structures - Items you would normally find in a defend a base
Quick Notes about the dino boxes:
  1. There are two types of boxes – Max level and Dino Mutations
  2. Max level dinos are just basic perfect level 30 x (difficulty) tames. So if you are playing on difficulty 1 the max dino level you will get is 45. If you play on max difficulty (Official Settings) the max level dino you will receive is 225. Exception is egg dinos (Deinonychus, Wyvern, Rock Drakes, magmasaurs) which spawn with the highest egg level available – still scales with difficulty.
  3. Mutated dinos come in higher tier boxes. You can receive a dino with one stat mutation i.e. Giga line mutated with melee or you can receive a dino with multiple stats mutated i.e. a Mana with High Health and Melee. This is completely randomized
  4. Mutations are scaled to difficulty as well. The higher the difficulty, the high the mutated stats will randomize to.
Dino Box Types:
  • Max Level (Any dino available max level)
  • Farming – Mantis, Doed, Anky…
  • Flying – Wyvern, Argy, PT…
  • Raid – Carbo/Stego for offense or thylacoleo/Megalosaurus for defense…
  • Water – tuso, megalodon…
  • Mutations single – Any dino you would normally see with one mutation stat mutated (Health/Melee)
  • Mutations Multiple – Any dino you would normally see with multiple mutations (Mana for health/Melee/Stam or Velo… etc)

How it works in Action:

Don’t feel like creating bases to raid? Good News! I have done it in “The Island” for you. I have utilized my PVP experience to build out bases with the loot inside! The bases may look the same, but the genius about the lootboxes is all the loot will be different each time. If you raid all the bases on the map and want more loot/dinos, just transfer the loot off the map, then restart the server I created then start again!

You can download the premade map here[drive.google.com].

For singleplayer, just simply put it in your saved arks folder when your steam Ark is saved (\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\ARK\ShooterGame\Saved\SavedArksLocal). For others, such as people that use ASM, you can just place it where your server file is saved, usually it is your “SavedArks” folder, or start a new server on the cluster with it. You can backup a current Island save by changing the name of your TheIsland.ark file to TheIsland_Backup.ark. If you want to reload that backup, just put it back in the folder as TheIsland.ark and overwrite the new file you have placed. Once you have it set up, make sure you have the Drowsy Lootbox Mod loaded and start the singleplayer game/server up and start raiding some bases for loot – IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MOD INSTALLED WHEN STARTING THE SERVER/SINGLEPLAYER GAME YOU WILL LOSE ALL THE LOOT PLACEMENT INSIDE THE BASES. If this happens, no worries, you will have to re-copy the “TheIsland.Ark” file back into the folder. To easily test if it is working, start up the game with the mod and go into creative mod and find and destroy a stone hut. You should see a stone base box inside.

I loved your map with premade basses. Would you ever do another one? Or do you know if there are any out there?

Just an update, I downloaded the new Ark editor and tried to import this mod, it won't port over until Gen 1 because of special modules it relies on for the lootbox mechanics. Based on the release schedule and my usual schedule, I wouldn't expect me to revisit this until November of next year.

If you are not going to continue modding, could you consider uploading the code somewhere to make the mod open source?

@whyte - no there is no other .ini configurations. I have also moved on from modding, so this mod will be as is. My suggestion is to download beacon and look to change the loot tables of the dino boxes. I am not sure if that is even possible though through just .ini though, it has been 2 years since I built this thing. You are able to modify the lootboxes of items with beacon, I believe.

Is there any more to the .ini that is changeable?
I've been looking to disable certain dinosaurs from the loot boxes but haven't been getting much in terms of progression.

I'm looking to remove noglins/astros etc.

After a few days of googling and not really getting anywhere here i am.
I hope you are able to help even if just advising. ty
