7. Monte la Difensa, Italy [Mission]

ObKrieger's 7th Infantry Regiment in WWII Series

Description
This is the seventh mission in a chronological series based on the real actions of the 7th Infantry Regiment throughout North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, from 1942 to 1945. This map is dedicated to Private Severino Amatucci, Company E, 7th Infantry Regiment, who was killed in action on November 5th, 1943.

Notes:

-I made the map using a heightmap of the real Monte la Difensa. It is geographically accurate, but scaled way down, and I made adjustments to the layout to facilitate better movement.

-Weapons and environment are mostly historically accurate. I will update the mission later with more authentic squads and inventory.

- In the real battle on Monte la Difensa, the 7th Infantry Regiment found itself desperately short on food and ammunition, and was unable to quickly evacuate casualties due to the altitude. To simulate these conditions, there is no ammo resupply- you must find it on dead comrades.

-I am working on updates and new maps. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, friends.

Historical Info:

November 5th, 1943- Monte la Difensa, Italy

After crossing the Volturno River in October, the 5th Army pushed north, with its 3rd Infantry Division on the road to Cassino. By November, the division had reached the Mignano Gap- the final approach to Cassino, where the Germans had established the Barbara Line. The 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd ID was assigned the task of securing Monte la Difensa, which dominated the gap to the west.

On 5 November the Second Battalion moved up to the front with the First Battalion. Moving out of its assembly area at 0530 the battalion crossed the line of departure, the road junction held by Company "B", at 0900. Encountering only light mortar fire initially the battalion overran Caspoli. Casale was seized early in the afternoon. One enemy machine gun was knocked out on the right flank. Two platoons of Company "E" moving into the saddle which separates Monte Camino from Monte la Difensa encountered machine gun, mortar and grenade fire from the saddle and the right of the saddle. Numerous casualties were suffered from the enemy fire. Companies "E" and "G" rushed the Monte Camino hill mass striving to gain observation on the heights dominating the saddle. Mortar and artillery fire were received. One reinforced platoon succeeded in nearing the top of Monte Camino as a platoon of enemy infantry and six machine guns strategically located held up the Second Battalion. In the afternoon the commanding officer was convinced that it was practically impossible to reach the mountain top in daytime because of direct observation on the part of the enemy on any route of approach. All attempts to take the mountain and saddle that day ceased. Approximately twenty five casualties were suffered by the White Battalion that day. The wounded lay in their exposed positions until darkness, when some were evacuated as enemy snipers fired on the litter squads.

This map marks the end of the 7th Infantry Regiment's path through Southern Italy in 1943. The regiment was unable to secure the mountain after several attempts, and were relieved by the 36th Infantry Division several days later..

ALLIES: As a member of the Second Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, you are to secure the village of Caspoli, then ascend Monte la Difensa, knocking out Barbara Line defenses as you work your way up the side of the mountain. Stiff resistance at the peak will likely force you to dig in for the night.

AXIS: As a member of Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 8, you are ordered to hold the Barbara Line against the Americans. Defend in depth and use the terrain to your advantage.

To be rigth the name of the defensive line was The Bernhardt Line, not Barbara. it would be greate if you can add the skin of US/Canadian F.S.S.F. that take last action on Monte la Defenza. However nice work )

Ps: I was born in Caspoli
